Took the deckboat out earlier this week to dip a line.
As I was stepping down from the dock onto the back of the boat to open the battery compartment I looked at the transom area. Sure enough, a 3-4' water moccasion was sunning himself/herself there. I stepped back up on the dock, gingerly opened the mooring cover on the side of the boat until I could reach in to get a metal support pole that is for the cover. Once I had one, I extended it out and tossed the snake into the water. The little bugger tried to get back into the boat, I smacked it away and it swam off.
I scanned the area at the back of the boat as I unlocked the battery compartment to turn on the batteries.
I was weary as I reached in, because the steering cables are on this side of the boat and the hole for them in the transom is large enough for a snake to get in and make a home in the battery compartment area. I looked in as best as I could and reached in and turned the Perko switch on. WHACK...... just kidding........ :)
No sudden stinging sensation.

Ya gotta love Florida.

Also,

First time I used Grass Shrimp fishing.
I caught 1 bluegill and 5 Sunshine Bass as they are called.
I released all back to be caught again....
I hear these Bass are a hybrid, they put up a good fight, they took the bait and tried to swim deep. Fun on light tackle.
These fish are silver with 3 stripes or lines running along the back on either side.

Gen 3:14,15 I don't mind snakes as long I don't see a poisonous one (I have dogs), then there is that old enmity, and I go to bruising their head.

Re: Snake in da boat

A couple weeks ago I was out in the yard tossing a tennis ball to the dog at dusk. I look at my snowmobile on its trailer and there is this huge (at least 5' long) snake coiled up on the cowling. It (the snowmobile) has a black cover on it, so I figure the snake is gathering heat from it before the sun goes down.

I am not a big fan of the serpent, so I run into the garage and come running out with a hoe to destroy him. As I get close to him, I can feel my heart beating hard in my chest. I get a look at him and I see his head/neck is kind of deformed, so I figure there is a mouse in his mouth. I raise the hoe up and come down with tremendous force to decapitate...my son's rubber toy cobra.

I woudn't kill a snake for doing it's job. There are tons of 'em here in the Santee swamp and they will leave you alone unless you scare them and they fall out of the tree.

Re: Snake in da boat

For me it would be a little of both. I don't like snakes at all, the only good ones are dead ones. If I see a black racer, which are abundant around my parts, I'll let the go as long as they aren't in the trees above me. A copperhead, which are even more plentiful, or anything that resembles one dies instantly, no matter what I tear up doing it. I'm the type of dumba!@ that would shoot a hole in the boat trying to get rid of the snake. If I do kill one I wil usually skin it out and save the hide. I like to try and make covers for stuff with them. I used to have a belt buckle I covered that looked real good.

I get moccasions in the yard, and they get to meet my shovel, have a 3 year old, don't need him playing with them. Snakes don't bother me, after all it is Florida, if it not the snakes, its some big old spider, or them damn fire ants, or better yet a gator.

Listen fellow's, If gageguy can admit that then I can admit this. I'm 33yrs old and can pretty well take care of myself but the fact is snakes just give me the williys. Where I live now we do not have poisinous snakes...I still don't care I don't like them. My son catches the occasional garter snake, he plays with them...Thats fine by me but DAD don't want nothing to do with it. GOT IT, ANY QUESTIONS? Hey on the upside I got over my fear of the boogieman :D

DEFENSIVE...WHO ME, nah... JUST DROP IT ALREADY :)

Re: Snake in da boat

A few years ago a freind of mine and i had some trot lines set out in a backwater off the river. We were checking the lines in my 15' hustler i was in the back of the boat baiting and my friend was in the front taking the fish off. To make a long story short he came to a large allagator snapping turtle  and droped the line, so i still had it at the other end of boat, he said he knows a friend of his that can cook the turtle but he's scared to take it off, so me and my six pack of bravery said i'll take it off, did i mention that my friend can't :D swim, so i get to the turtle and it is really POed i just flip it over the side of the boat and cut the leader, the turtle headed for my buddy at a hot trot he stands up on the very front of the boat looking real white but the turtle couldn't get to him so he finnally settled down and so did the turtle i think he was worn out from hanging on the trotline, we took him back to camp and put him in the pickup and headed for his friends house when we decided to stop at the local bar and have a cold one, then i had another brainstorm (maybe the turtle is thursty to) so we walked in the back door and on the way i dropped the turtle at the back door, he is really POed by now, i walked to the bar and got a beer the turtle proceeded to corner everyone in there on top the booths and the bar tender yells at my buddy(the river rat) to get that @#$%# turtle out of there, i told the bartender don't worry i'll get it out, and i did, the bartender bought me a brew and threw my buddy out. You never know who your friends are. :D :D

Re: Snake in da boat

I remember a time when i was about 11 and my dad took me fishing on his ranger bass boat down in wewahitchika florida on the apalachacola river, we were at camp and geting ready to shove off about 6 am, just as the sun is comming out, as i was oushing us off from the dock there was a 5 ft mocasin in the water between the dock and the boat, so I franticly jumped into the boat and my dad jumped about 5 ft in the air, asking what was going on, well i told him, and seeing how we were at a camping ground, he decided to pull out his 12 guage and shoot it ( so it didnt disturb anyone else) well me being a younge boy i ask if i could shoot it, now keep in mind, this was a sawed off 12 guage double barrel, he always kept it in the boat for just this reason. When i stood up at the bow area i could see the snake comming to us, so i loweed the gun and shot it, just as i did, the kick from the gun threw me back, and i knocked my dad into the water, he was off limber leaning over the other side well i missed the snake, and my dad was yelling at me, so natrally as water mocasins are aggressive, it was a race between the snake getting into the 8" boat and my dad getting his *** out of the water. of course i used the second shot buit was hesitant cause my shoulder felt like was was back by the motor and i hit the snake this time, but i also hit the trolling motor........

now me at the age of 11 was pretty scared (my dad was a hard man) and didnt know what to tell my dad when he asked if i hit it the second time as he was drying his *** off, and when i told him i shot the trolling motor i just knew he was gonna tear off a switch and beat me brainless, but all he said was...well you may have tried to kill me and save my life over the course of 5 min, but at least the snake wont hurt any of the kids at camp now!!!

Re: Snake in da boat

and one other i thought i would share.....

my dad was up in a slue (what florida boys call creeks off small rivers) and was fishing for bluegil, he always kept a sidearm when he went by himself for the gators and the snakes, he was sitting up on the bow of the same aforementioned boat just trying this little spot on his way home that evening and his trolling motor got wedged between what apeared to be 2 branches in the water.... when he leaned forward to get it un tangled he saw what he thought was a huge gator 3 ft in front of the boat, he jumped backward and tripped over his tackel box he was on his way out of the boat and his sidearm caught the throttle ( here is the retarded part.....) my dad for some strange reason hand the rear motor (4 stroke honda) trimmed down and was in idle ( he told me he was just getting ready to leave and thought he'd check this on spot out, well he threw the boat into gear and it took off accross the river with him hanging out the side of the boat, he some how managed to pull himself up enough to pull the motor back into neutrel and climb back in......he still wont admit thats what happend he says it was a gator, but the guy in the boat sitting 15 ft from him saw the whole thing go down and it was just a log, and that night at the campfire i thought it was the best thing ever!!!!!

Anything that can scare the living heck out of me, just by lying there threatens me. Especially when it is that big. My heart could have stopped beating ya know. ;)

I didn't chip the paint, thankfully. My kids got a huge kick out of it. They now are putting all kinds of rubber critters on it to get a reaction out of me. Somehow a 12" Tyranasaurus Rex doesn't get the same adrenaline rush as a 5' coiled hog nosed snake. :D

Re: Snake in da boat

I will never forget the large snake we caught in the school yard one day. I was in 9th grade in Artesia NM, and we were taking it inside to the science teacher. It was what was called a bull snake if I remember right. I handed it to one of the other guys while I got some books out of my locker. Well, he thought it would be funny to scare the girls. So he lets it loose into the girl's rest room. Next thing you know the whole hall way is screaming girls.

We never did find the snake. They closed the bath room and sent the custodian looking for it. We never did hear what happened to the thing.

Re: Snake in da boat

I have a fascination with snakes, especially the poisonous kind. Not that I like them, they just interest me.

I read years ago about the Mojave Rattlesnake, which looks like a Western Diamondback (which has hemotoxic venom) but has venom more like a cobra (neurotoxic venom). Living in El Paso at the time, I decided to go see if I could find one. El Paso would be about the extreme eastern limit of their range.

I found some likely rattlesnake country---a rocky hillside. It was early spring. I was walking along a footpath when I spotted a whole pile of baby rattlesnakes just laying there in the sun. My heart raced as a stopped and inspected the ground around me. There were probably 60 or 70 baby snakes all balled up.

Not wanting to step on them, I moved cautiously around them while looking for others. Suddenly, the ground gave way beneath me and one leg sunk into the ground up to my knee. By now my heart starts to REALLY race.

In less than ten seconds there are rattlesnakes coming up out of the ground ALL around me. I've never seen anything like it since (and don't really care to). There must have been an additional 30 or 40 rattlesnakes within 15 feet of me.

Obviously, I got out of there without being bitten. I did manage to nab two of the baby snakes as specimens, but they turned out to be regular old diamondback rattlesnakes. I still have seen no Mojave rattlers to this day.

If you live in southern Arizona or the Deming, New Mexico area you may have seen a Mojave rattler.

If my story made your skin crawl, don't feel alone. Makes my skin crawl just to think about it!

-dd-

Re: Snake in da boat

Was out crappie fishing yesterday bouncing from tree to tree. All of the sudden about 20 yards away we hear a big splash. Apparently a moccisan dropped out of tree and swam off. That sucker was close to 6 feet long!

Could you imagine that happening to a tree you were tied up too?

We check trees now for loose hangers and snakes!

YIKES!!!
