Re: SNAPPED a head bolt :-(

I may be late on this ,but I have worked on my own old Johnson motors since the late 60s If the head bolt broke of close to the top I can tell you now it is correded in there good and tight. I would leave it alone and run the motor as it is. The head is still toqued down from when it was installed. You are just going to open a bag of worms trying to get it out. I know I will get a lot of feed back from this suggestion.Been there done this.

Re: SNAPPED a head bolt :-(

it wasn't a head bolt, its a water cover bolt.

I have drilled it almost all the way out, the first 3/4 inch is clear, and the thread is good..

I used a cheap drill bit and when it got to the end, it shattered and left a piece of itself stuck in the end, I am going to see if runnin the engine doesn't shake it loose, if I can get that out, then Its fixed..

(I drilled progressively bigger hole down the center of the bolt shaft till I could collapse what was left with a small flathead screwdriver.. then I pulled it out... worked great, but the drill bit piece proved harder as its wedged in tight right up the back..

maybe the heat and vibration of running the motor will loosen things up..

rgds

Frank
