The cam grind will be all wrong, a boat cam differs greatly from an automotive type cam. The basic blocks are often the same but there were specific marine duty blocks as well. Many were high nickel or higher strength blocks.

Carburetion is also different as on a boat you need to control vapors and backfire flames. Corrosion resistance is another issue.

First I heard of high nickle or higher strength blocks, I'd like to hear more.

wow! Now that was random! It's no wonder that a guy just looking for answers to what the difference is between a marine block, and an automotive block, can't find find anything!

It seems the administraters like to move the threads to some random topic like, prop questions????

OK, so I did some searching to help with this never ending debate. While there are tons and tons of threads regarding this, these two seem to be the most definitive and also reasonably short:

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=171153

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=199931

In the second one there seems to be some ambiguity on auto vs. truck cams, but almost every single time I have reviewed this in the past, people agree that a truck/rv cam is the one that is most compatible with typical wet manifolds and risers.

I may let it go for another day or so, but I will probably lock this soon as it is mucking up the Prop forum and there continues to be "my uncle said you need unobtanium flangelrods" type posts in it . . .

It takes a LOT more hp to keep a baot at speed than a car and automotive engines are not built to take that, marine engines are.

Wrong. There is nothing special about a marine block. Same castings, same cranks, same rods, same pistons, etc...... They do get brass core plugs and paint though....

Many were high nickel or higher strength blocks...

Where does this stuff come from??????

Don't hold your breath, the unicorn ain't comin.....
