I have been re-building a 1984 Starcraft FM160 for the last year. All I have left is the last part of carpet.

Well yesterday I bought a 1982 Sylvan 16 SMA (SportsMaster) Seems to be a model that iboats has no info on?

Anyways, I got it off ebay from a guy who lives in my area, and we have actually became friends over the last two days. He completely re-did the floor and added a lot of nice upholstery. It also has a new paint job. (I know, where are the pictures) I'll post them as soon as the weather permits.

The thing that is getting me about the two boats is the weight. NADA states that my 16' Starcraft weights 1300LBS while the 16' Sylvan I just picked up only weights 650. How does the Starcraft weight double?

I measured everything and the Starcraft is ultimately about 3" wider, however.

It had a 115hp mercury on it, but I took it off because A) the boat is rated only for a 90hp, and B) I don't want that big of a motor.

So as I toss around to which one I am going to keep, I ask is NADA right about the weight, and if so will the Sylvan be a noticeable more nimble boat and will the 85hp I would put on it be a significantly better performer than if I left the 85 on the Starcraft?

you have to take into account the weight listed, if acurate, was when the boat was built, but both boats have been rebuilt so the NADA is mute.

It sounds like the Starcraft guy added alot of stuff the boat didn't have originally, furniture is heavy.

You do have an interesting problem, maybe take both boats out and see which one you like the most, 3'' of beam will make alot of difference on the water though, it should be a more stable boat and you just spent a year redoing it.

As for the hulls they are both excellent companies so you can't lose there.

I have a 16' Sea-Nymph with an Evinrude 50 and it will run @30mph gps.

This is a problem alot of people would like to have, which boat do I keep?

I am going off the weight of the Starcraft that NADA says it weights, and what NADA says the Sylvan weights. That was where my comparison was coming from.


I am the "Starcraft guy"; I just picked up the Sylvan, and you know what I have been thinking about the fact that I have been working on this Starcraft for a year, and do feel a connection to it. I really think I may throw a 50 hp Evinrude I have on the Sylvan and sell it. Then re-sell the 115 merc it came with separately.

....And ya I buy distressed boats, outboards, Campers and Motor homes and flip them, so the hard part is deciding which ones to keep. Hard situation huh?

I am still quite curious if the listed weights are right? Hope someone else can chime in on it.

I worked on the Sylvan today (blizzard again, NO WORKIE), and just need to slap the motor on it. I have decided to for sure keep the Starcraft, even though it looks like a floating terd, and this one has new paint.
