So how did the water get in there?

I have been cutting out the floor. There has been water on the right side but not the left.
The hull is in good shape. There was some cracks in the skim coat of fiberglass on the floor. Did all the seep in through the floor?

Did it pass from one compartment to another? Should they be water tight?

What amount of water we talking? Can it be condensation or is it much more? What is the "Skim coat of fiberglass"? What boat (make and model)? Do you have pics?

I meant to say a skim coat if resin.
it is a 1998 bayliner capri. Are the carpartments below the floor meant to be air tight from tbe factory?

There is a couple in inches of water on the right side. I still have more cutting ti do but the left side looks dry

A skim coat of resin, even if it has some glass in it, will not be waterproof, this was the downfall of boat production over a couple of decades. To save time, money and weight they used as little glass over the plywood floor as possible, this held up for a short time, but water would find its way through and start the rotting process.

The other problem was the lack of training and understanding of the process by those doing the work, it was sort of an entry level job with little training before you were on the production floor building boats. Much of the detail and quality of the final part was left up to these less than eager non boaters who were just looking for a paycheck so they could get drunk on the weekend.

Your problem may come from improper storage of the boat and exposure to the elements. Boats should be covered or garaged when not in use.

If your boat has been stored on the trailer and the trailer is on a slope draining the water to the right side... that's where the water came from.

Compartments aren't usually watertight from the factory.

You should check your transom for rot while you have the decking torn out.
