So how much does a big Starcraft weigh?

Total tow weight?

Boat weight with that motor?

Weight of the motor and outdrive alone?

My records show the 140 weighs 635 lbs and the I6-165 weighs 715 lbs.
That includes the engine and drive complete.
Not sure if that's correct but I believe it's close.

From iboat boat specs. And about 700 lbs. for the trailer and add more for fuel, batteries, ice and beer. Play safe and figure 4000 lbs. fully loaded, less for Lite beer from Miller. :smile:

Thanks! Looks like my old truck could pull it just fine.

That chart shows a Chieftain could have a pair of 140s for a total of 280hp. That would weigh 1230 pounds. Might be fun to remove the I/O and stick a bracket on back with a 275hp outboard for 1/2 the weight! Heh heh.

Be aware, the Admiral may think a frying pan to the head will cure you.... sadly, it wont....

Well, I've always maintained that a man needs 3 boats for fishing. :fish2:

• a small boat for skinny water
• a large boat for big water and
• a high powered bass boat for running and gunning

Over the years I've had all of those versions but never more than one at a time.

A few days ago my wife saw me reading Watermann's thread about his Chieftain restoration and commented on how nice his boat looked. So I showed her some pix of other large Starcraft and she got fired up about the big boats. SHE is the one who thinks it would be good for us to own a Chieftain, et. al.

She actually told me that for several weeks she'd been thinking that after I get the Kingfisher project completed that maybe we should look for a bigger, deep water boat as a complement to the skinny water machine. To top it all off, she's the one who got me back into fishing as a hobby. I'd gotten away from it for a number of years.

So it's all HER fault! :lol:

Now your talking. I was thinking about getting one of the bigger Chief's too but fell in love with little one since it's just the 2 of us it's the perfect size. I found that when I only had the little 16'r for fishing that we spent a good amount of time just cruising in the fishing boat looking for wildlife and enjoying the scenery. A 2 stroke OB wasn't the best choice for that and the little boat doesn't like rough water. Now I've found that fishing adds the stress of trying to find and catch fish with the cruising being way more relaxing. Secluded coves, beaches, picnics and slow cruises in a boat you built yourself became more of a draw to the water.

I had a 25' Bayliner Cierra some 15 years ago and it was easily handled by just two folks. Dunno if the "sail" area of that pocket cruiser is less than a big Chieftain though.

At 62, I'm trying to plan ahead. I already have some limiting health and medical issues so I want to be careful in making boat selection choices. My bride is younger than me and we do have her 9 y.o. boy as well. They both really love fishing. We've been fishing from the bank for the last few years and this year got more serious about catching. Freshwater mostly.

For fishing in the Gulf, we'd need a bigger boat in order to venture out more than a mile or so, compared to the Kingfisher. Hence the idea of an Islander or Chieftain.

My towing capacity is listed as 6800 lbs. but the truck IS 20 years old. Don't wanna strain it too much.

I was just cruising on craigslist and saw an ad for a stainless outboard bracket including 2 swim platforms for $200! It had a 250hp motor on it so it would likely work okay for a 275 on a Chieftain, right? :lol:
