And I need help. How to a resync the gears when putting everything back together.

Model number is 65723s lower unit however came off of a 1970 evinrude 60 hp.

Both are hydro electric drive. Both should be very similar.

I need a driveshaft socket, Long snap ring pliers, and a slide hammer, a puller for the bearing carrier. I already have 1/4"x20 rod to pull with.

I have done all of the electrical trouble shooting so now I am stuck and its time to do surgery.

I am assuming a clogged oil pump screen or stuck shift piston.

when putting it all back together how do I resync the gears. Anything special I need to watch for.

I know it would be easier to junk the motor and buy another. BUT I am not going to do that. The boat was originally set up for this motor, and I want the boat all original.

Do you have an OEM manual, ...:)

There are a few posts in here about that type of LU that might help.

Have a manual, Clymer though can't find a FSM. I've been reading for a while everything seems to deal with just the wiring, I need mechanical info.

No "synching" needed.

whats it doing? Not shifting? (Should be in Forward no matter what) The Plungers on the electric shift solenoids are adjustable.. I had a lot of fun with the same type of lower you are playing with.. Mine would go into forward and neutral.. No reverse.. I had to lengthen the rod by turning the plunger.. Took a few on and offs of the lower till I got the adjustment right.. Once I did I got it perfect..

And what are you going to do with that sildehammer? Maybe to pull the oil pump out? I just ask, because I have completely gutted that lower and didn't use a slidehammer at all..

Used a puller kinda like this one http://www.harborfreight.com/14-piece-gear-puller-set-30305.html.. or http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200391523_200391523
Added some longer bolts and washers to the end of those long rods.. They treaded right into the bearing carrier.. Threaded down to the prop shaft and used a socket and ratchet to pull it out.. Came off gravytrain... I borrowed the thing.. Not sure where he got it.. One of those Cheapo tool stores..

thanks so much for the advice Josh any idea how to adjust the plungers where they should be?

Slide hammer was indeed for the oil pump. I am assuming a stuck piston and a tear down is in order.

Is it not shifting at all???

Plunger adjustment.. It's a PITA.. I didn't have the correct manual for my engine so I did it trial and error.. What I did ( it took a few times) I turned em all the way in.. That gave me Forward and neutral.. Then I lengthened the rod counting the turns.. The second time I had forward and reverse no neutral.. Kinda met it in the middle and got it all working good.. The pros use a drill to turn the shaft and energize the wires so they don't have to do the on off thing.. I didn't have a drill that would turn it.. So I had to do the on off thing.. I got good at removing and installing that drive.. It helps to have a friend help you.. If you have the manual you got it made..
Questions...
Are you running the correct oil in the lower? It uses a special kind for electric shift..Type C
Have you removed the lower yet? Sometimes those wires get pinched it there and short out and won't shift.. If it shifts fine out of the water its a wiring problem..
It has to be running to shift.. A starter might spin it enough but you will wear one out troubleshooting it unless maybe remove the plugs.
A long pair of needle-nose pliers will likely pull the pump out.. Slidehammer I guess only if stuck and I wouldn't yank to hard on it..

The plungers should be + or - 1/64 " from the top of the solenoid to the top of the plunger. Then tighten up the two jam nuts. If you have the correct d/s socket and adapter you can run this g/c right on bench with an electric drill having the g/c in an upright position Also need a battery and some jumper wires to activate the solenoids. Done it many times. When you put it back on you'll know it will shift if all else is okay. Don't want to have the w/p on when doing this.

Re: So I am going to have to take my lower unit apart. Help needed.

Thanks for all the responses guys I get nothing. I can hear the solenoids click if I put power to them but nothing happens. Something seemed off to me about the whole thing though as I recently resealed the whole gearcase (water intrusion) and discovered that the wave washer was missing. So I am wondering what else is wrong.

Now I have done something admitedly stupid I have run it like this. Now not paying attention I have had the switch in neutral (motor stuck in forward), and it seems as if occasionally it actually wants to pop into neutral under a full load. Now it NEVER does that if the switch is in Forward.

You can hear them with the engine running? You got superman ears...
Do you have the push button control box or something?
Anyhow.. It wanting to go into neutral makes me think it's a adjustment.. Someone coulda trashed the pump running the wrong stuff in it too IDK...
