Hello fello boaters, ive got a garmin 440s fishfinder with gps combo on the boat externially mounted on the transom. With that said where are those pesky fish at? Are the sound waves being shot straight down and im looking at the fish just behind the boat or are the waves pointing behind the boat and its showing me whats say 50 ft behind the boat? Its got me scratching my head

Lay a cone shaped paper cup upside down on a table. The area of the table covered by the cup is where the fish are that being displayed on the screen and the table is the bottom of the body of water. The only thing we can't illustrate in that example is water depth so raise the cup and imagine the cup getting bigger and bigger the higher you raise it off the table. A 20 degree cone would cover a relatively small area in five feet of water, but it would cover a very large area in 50 or 100 feet of water. So the answer to your question is "the fish are in the cone of coverage". That sir, may be under the boat, many feet behind it, off to either side, or even forward depending where they are within the cone.
