Hi all, joined the forums after being inspired by one of the boat rebuilds on here. I've just bought a lovely Dateline Bounty, equipped with a 1989 85hp Force. Excited to get into the season and so far my first go at outboard servicing has been good fun with no nasty surprises. But a question for anyone who might know... when I bought the thing, the lower unit was detached and it came with a bag containing the lower leg bolts, the shift rod connector... and this. Anybody recognise it? Any idea where it goes?

I have to admit, it doesn't look familiar to me, but then I am not very experienced in all types of engines either. But you can do a search on your engine via the manufacture, HP, model and year to find a illustrated parts break down and look at all the parts for your engine. Then you can scan all the different parts and see if it even goes with your engine. One other method would be to buy a manufacturer's factory shop manual, specifically for your model, year and HP engine and see everything you ever wanted to know about your engine, including parts and specifications. But DON'T buy an aftermarket manual. They don't cover a lot of info you would need for yours. They try to cover so many models that they leave out a lot of needed info for most engines. JMHO

Thanks for the suggestions - will check in the daylight, if we get a break in the rain!
@gm280 can you suggest where I can buy a manufacturer's manual? I bought an aftermarket one which is useful as far as it goes but you're right that it doesn't cover everything.

I did a typical web search for my shop manual, but ended up getting in off Ebay. But do a typical web search and see what pops up. You could even contact the manufacturer or a marine near you that services your type engine and see what they can get for you. Just an idea.

@foodfisher - good call. Any dealers you could suggest with an online presence? I'm in the UK and I'd guess most of them would be over the pond... Going to need some spares (carb kits most likely) and they're tough to come by over here
