the "skeg" is the last thing to be concerned with.
waiting to hear what wrench says....
here's preventative maint. I would do:
1) check compression on all 6 cyl.. should be 100
or above and all 6 within 10% of each other.
2) drop lower unit and inspect. looking for any
signs of water intrusion in oil. change impeller,
then re-install.
3) remove 3 carbs and clean/rebuild. not easy cuz
things like starter need to be pulled to gain
access. buy 3 carb kits at $25ea.
4) rebuild fuel pumps. easy... new pump diaphrams
and gaskets.
this motor gets 100% of her internal lube from gas.
any delivery problem along the line will create a
lean mix and fry a piston pretty quickly.

parts for above is pretty cheap. it's the labor
involved (10+ hrs.) that will add up at $60/hr.

Brother Chris, your boat is close. Ours seems to be bigger than yours. It's also missing the canopy.

peterdavidwood.
I have had nothing but good times with my boat. It is very durable and handles great when turning, or going through big waves.
I re-inforced my bow with extra fiberglass from the inside. I did that because of where I go, and what I do with the boat. I'm kind of careless when beaching my boat.
I fiberglassed from the inside so I did not have to do alot of sanding and so I did not have to gelcoat it to make it look normal.
I also re-did my transom. It seemed to be rotting out, so a friend and I cut it out and replaced it and then sandwiched it with nice aluminum.
Enjoy your boat and keep posting.
Cheers,
Brother Chris...

Just another note, this one about your skeg.
My neighbor broke his skeg off and instead of replacing it, we measured and cut a piece of nice aluminum and folded it in half, then drilled some holes in it and put stainless nuts and screws through it. Voila...a new skeg.
And with aluninum, it will break if it hits something under water.
It doesn't look like a $1,000,000, but it works fine.
Just a thought.
Oh, and that cost him...let me see...nothing, cause he had extra aluminum around and I had the nuts and bolts.

Peter, just a word of warning.... You will have plenty of volunteers to go fishing or skiing... but everyone will mysteriously have other things on their schedule when it comes to help you getting your rig back to seaworthy.

LOL, Human nature. When I offer to take someone flying. They're like great, then I ask them to help out with the fee, they don't wanna go anymore :)

I've been blessed with a friend of my wife's who doesn't mind getting his hands dirty and has offered to help with the boat. He also is the same one who told my wife she was getting a good deal. He's offered to assist on working on the motor with me, should the repairs be outside of our current budget. Still haven't heard from the mechanic yet so we are still on hold for now.

Does this sterling wife of yours have any sisters??? I can get my Choc Lab to bring me a beer, but never met/dated a woman who brought me a boat. Keep her and count your blessings.

So where is the best place to buy parts? Online or just a local shop. Appears my boat is not getting the attention that a paying customer deserves and I may just (attempt) do the work myself.

okay, thanks. From what the shop told me I'll probably have hard time finding parts so this link may come in handy.

Any one have advice on flushing the gas tank? Should I bother? Mainly I just want to put gas through it and see if it runs...
