Skargo first of all congrats on getting the thumbs up on the live-aboard program.:D

Secondly "dock rats" is the proper term I believe

That second cruiser for 9800 would be unbelievable IMO the flybridge looks extremely inviting:cool: and aft cabins are sweet too.

Good luck with the endeavor...are you talking winters too?

Now you are really make me jealous!!!

I would love to have soemthing like that in the water that we could stay on at the dock or take out for weekends, long weekends or even week vacations. Kind of a break in and step up towards our great loop boat someday!:D

However, my wife doesn't think that we will ever need more than one boat at a time. I am still working on covincing her otherwise. ;)

Ok I am new and prejudice because I am purchasing one Wednesday, but at any rate some info to digest.
The older Bayliners do not hold their value and they are everywhere. By that I mean you can find one ON THE CHEAP. Bonus, some owners really have taken care of them, so with a little (lot?) patience and a lot of looking, you should be able to find a diamond in the rough well within your price range. Of course you can find this with any boat, but IMO the Bayliners always seem to have the lower prices and more of them are for sale. You can find a nice 30' cruiser on the cheap you just have to be willing to sift through the garbage.

Best of luck and keep us posted!

Haven't got the rates from this marina yet. I think the next marina over charges $1.50.

Scott-
That's the 'transient' rate. The long-term rates are based monthly.
Our current rate is $53/foot. And remember- that's for 12 months. Last time I checked, Tidewater was $134/foot- for SUMMER slips only!
We have a bunch of livaboards here at HdG. If you're serious I can introduce you to a couple of them that I know- so you can pick their brains a little before 'jumping in'.

To answer the original question, I would refer to those people as lucky bass-turds. I tried to talk the ole lady into it but she wasn't having it. My company works all the way down in the Florida Keys, so I wanted to transfer down there, buy an older 35 footer or so, and call it home. Unfortunately, the answer was no. Hmm, I wonder how mad she would be if I just did it and told her afterwards. . . May have to consider that route, it would be too late, no refunds on boat purchases, right?

Well don't you know it's ok to say anything so long as you preface it with "I'm new"? It's totally fine. Like when you are about to say something really nasty about someone but preface it with "bless their heart" :D

Point taken... but you never said it was untrue.

Still looking?:) I hope you get a good one!! just remember ALL boats are only as good as the owner who takes care of it, not just Bayliners.

Clarification, we would not be living aboard! My poor writing skills!
I think my wife is agreeable because of the pool, seriously.
It's Penn's Beach Marina.

We would spend weekends and evenings there after work.

We are on our second "second home" now -- a 1989 Sea Ray 300 Sundancer (up from a 25' Larson express). Absolutely love the lifestyle of having a boat in the water a half-mile from home. Spend 40+ nights on board per year (in upstate NY no less).

Paid $17,300 for the boat and don't regret it for a second. Worth much more than that even in today's situation... not that I'm selling any time soon.

Would recommend you continue to think and look... and get it surveyed so you know what you're getting into. This is difficult money to spend but nearly ALWAYS worth it. You'll have much more leverage on price with the seller and surveys nearly ALWAYS pay for themselves. If you don't buy the boat, sell the survey back to the owner at half-price of what you paid (also pretty common).

GOOD LUCK and STICK WITH IT !!!!

I don't even know what they charge, we'll see what that does for my wife lusting after the pool LOL.

I heard Penns Beach slips costs about the same as Tidewater.

Let me add this: it's ABSOLUTELY the least expensive way to have a waterfront "condo". Over the last 5 years my yearly costs (excluding fuel) have averaged about $4500, which even includes boat maintenance. Keep in mind that summer slips will require the boat to be hauled every fall ...$$$$.

JUST DO IT! "Twice as Nice" can be the dinghy!

We keep debating in either moving permanently to a waterfront piece of property, or maybe getting a cheaper shore cottage and keeping our current home that we love and enjoy, only downfall is it's 21 miles from the Lapidum ramp.
I think in the meantime we'll do the cruiser thing, no way I get rid of our "dingy" LOL. I love that boat.

You haul yours every year, right? Is your slip year round? Penn's has "ice protected" slips according to their brochure. How long between bottom repaints can a boat go?

Who knows, I'm still floored by this being my wife's idea :D
She was totally against me getting our boat. That was back in March/April, now, she get's ticked off if weather or other plans cut into our boating time hahaha.

No, I usually keep her in the slip for 2 or 3 years. I hauled 'Winter Dream' last year because it was time to renovate the bottom.

Yes, the slips at Tydings are year-round. I'd estimate about 30% of the boats stay there all year. I like the fact that my pier has a livaboard to keep an eye on things-summer AND winter.

'Ice protected' slips? That could have a few different meanings. I hang 2 ice eaters below the hull and turn them on when the surface freezes up around the boat. Never needed to run them for more than a couple days at a time.

A good quality ablative paint (on a properly prepared bottom) will typically last for 2 or 3 years between haul-outs. I use Pettit Ultima SR-40: http://www.pettitpaint.com/catalog_browse.asp?ictNbr=176

The live aboard thing is our retirement plan. The wife really wants to live year round at the marina...and so do I. Around here the only ice protection in winter I've seen are some sort of aerator...that bubbles around the boat in the winter. Dunno what that is, but that's what I've seen. The only concern is how cold will it be on board, as boats don't have all that much insulation if you don't count the flotation foam.
