Skargo,
I read lots of your post and think you should GO 4 IT! I've posted this before but...
a couple we are friends with bought a 1969 Gibson house boat-44ft x 14ft for $4,000.:D
neither motors nor gen-set work:( .It looks decent- the slip is $5,500 yearly-free water hook up/ cheap elect. they have an apt less than a mile away. but stayed most of the long Texas summer (still 95 degrees here) on the boat. The section of marina is the newest/nicest on the lake. They have a small sail boat with a small gas OB that we use as a tender back and forth since they are at the end of a 1,000 slip marina. I park my boat at the end to pick them up/drop off or just visit. The boat has very large upper deck-front and back decks- full working galley-stereo-TV-HVAC-head

we have a blast with them- its old school retro cool- but clean...after tons of elbow grease. plus
good fishing at the slip!

I keep my Wellcraft fairly close to the middle of the same section. Lucky thier neighbors are almost all are cool-rarely come out- very nice large cruisers $$$$.{ the guy in the next slip spent $3,000 on a stereo early in the summer and finnaly came out for the week end-never leaving the slip in his $150,000+cruiser -instead he hangs out on thier boat!} its fun to see the boats and eye candy go by:cool: still bikini season here.:)

The live aboard thing is our retirement plan. The wife really wants to live year round at the marina...and so do I. Around here the only ice protection in winter I've seen are some sort of aerator...that bubbles around the boat in the winter. Dunno what that is, but that's what I've seen. The only concern is how cold will it be on board, as boats don't have all that much insulation if you don't count the flotation foam.

Come south for the winter with the yearly canadian migration!

and to the OP. one word:

Prices are really coming down around here as winter storage season nears.

Just get an old pontoon and frame up some walls and a roof, you'll be set.:D

my Pops has made pretty good money building these things. A friend of his drag over a POS Pontoon and my dad basically puts a three season porch on it. It usually ends up with a bareley running 40 horse Chrysler on the back. He usually pocketsw around $100-$1500 for his troubles.

BTW, 99% of the time these thing NEVER leave the marina. its just a spot to go drink and play cards.

Wow I have really noticed this. Where I'm at, some folks pay upwards of $4K for a slip and don't even come out but 1-2 times a year. Others come out but never leave the slip.

This really suprised me. Only 1 other guy in my row regularly comes out on the weekends and takes his boat out... 1 guy out of 24 boats on my dock!

not to highjack Skargo's thread--keep up posted!
but there are only a handful of folks around my slip that ever go out-some 1 or 2 times a year. the boat next to me has never gone out-I hear he did come out 1 time last year. we call it the orphan boat. Me and a buddy wash it off the bird /spider poop with the hose every now & then-sad. There are so many really nice boats that just sit-never move or are used.

I missed an INCREDIBLE deal on a 32' Trojan on Arks pier this past weekend. He had never seen it's owner in the 5 years it was there, and the owner sold it to one of the marina workers for $100!!! I'd have been all over that.

my Pops told me its a doller per fun factor.

a cabin on the lake will run you $150K for a one room shack, plus up keep and taxes. LOTS more if you want a nice place with some property.

A "party barge" can be had for a few hundred to a few thousand. at the marina on the river here you can get a slip with power only for somehting like $100 a month.

Most of these people just want a place on the water to go sit with friends, have some adult beverages and play cards. so for a couple thousand up front and under $1000 a season, they have a place on the lake. Plus this particular marina is only a 5 minute drive instead of an hr+ to go up north.

Howdy,

I just wanna say, this forum is awesome... Some ideas people come up with are great! I never would have thought of using a boat for a cabin up-north alternative. Way less cash! Makes me wish I lived someplace where the water doesn't freeze... Good luck with the search! I say go for it 100%

We have a friends who have an old 30+' aft cabin.
@ Herrington Habor South - Deale.
The boat doesn't even run,
It's their beach condo, Momma loves it.
He later bought a 20is' chris craft.
They run around in that, then go back to their condo.
Life is good

That's the plan here, we'll keep the Nova no matter what.
