so.. what the heck am i doing wrong?

so i bought this flag pole for my boat

I get it in, and have to wait a few days for the rain to let up, so i can try it. I take it out sunday and it just wont fit!!

i have stern socket with the brand name "perco" on it. It has a rubber flap cover, and what looks like threaded socket with 2 pins at 3 and 9, if 12 is strait forward. There is a small alignment notch at the 6 position.

The flag pole as 2 screws in the pole at the end you insert in the socket. one is right at the end, and the other is about 2 in or so up. if i try it insert the pole in the socket, i line up the screw with the notch, and it only goes in about 1/2 an inch. the lock collar is still up above the second screw and no where near the socket. I try taking the first screw out, and it will insert fully, but the second screw is still above the socket. If i remove both screws the collar just falls off...

I thought these stern light sockets were universal in fit, did i buy the wrong pole?

and the base of the flag pole has two screws just like this stern light does.


so they should work.. but they dont..

Looks like the collar is in the wrong location. Remove the top screw, slide the collar down beyond it and the put the screw back in

i can try that, but the pole doesnt fully seat in the socket with the first screw in place. i tried removing the second one all together and it still wouldnt work. maybe i got a different socket, because the alignment notch doesnt go all the way to the base of the hole.

Maybe i need to compart it to my real light pole. I know it works.

Just to state the obvious.....

Align the screw head at 6 and lower the mast into the socket.
Rotate the Cam portion of the collar to the 12 position and lower it in.
Twist the collar for a snug fit.

The collar looks to be round to the casual eye, but it isn't.
It only goes in one way.

A picture of the flag pole base might help.
I would have thought the collar should be Between the two screws

Like i said, the alinement notch on my socket at the 6 oclock point does not go all the way to the bottom of the socket. The alinement screw head hits the bottom of the notch before the pole ever bottoms out in the socket. The collar is still way up on top of the second screw.

I had a similar pole on my old boat, and i remember both screws going into the alinement notch and then twisting the collar until its snugged up. This one wont do that.

I was looking around for flagpoles that would go into that socket as well and found some reviews that the flagpoles were misleading in that they say universal but require a new socket. I also heard that some of the poles were non-refundable so I stayed away. The cheaper route is to simply use your stern light pole and to attach your flag to it using some clips. I got something similar to this...

Compare the Flag pole to your light pole. Differences?

For another comparison, here is mine.



My locking collar will slide all the way up to the light.

Edit: It sounds like your screws need to be moved.

I have something real similar to yours if not the same, but i dont use the telescoping part. Take the screws out to see if just the pole fits.

I have just the bottom screw in the pole and the collar fits into the socket way below where the second screw should be.

yea, mine looks like yours. I tried taking all the screws out, and the pole fits, but the collar never snugs up. I guess mine is different. My light has a single screw which is about half way between the two on the flag pole. Also, my light collar is threaded, where the flag pole is not.
