So who's right?

I've been reading posts about what sealants and greases to use on the lower unit and water pump assy. Some say to use Sealer 1000 where pump housing meets plate, some say not necessary. Some say to use it on where gearcase the mates with the exhaust housing and on the bolts. Some say, not necessary.
So who's right? and I can't seem to find Sealer 1000 anywhere (tried Walmart, auto parts stores and hardware stores.)
And what is triple gaurd grease equivalent? (lithium grease?, bearing grease?)

Its all pretty well explained in the manual that goes with your motor. Which you do have, right? EVERY motor is different in the assembly process, so no way can ya do a blanket statement, and get an answer.

Re: So who's right?

Well, if I were to make a blanket statement, in most cases nothing is needed between the housing and plate. However as with all blanket statements there are exceptions. But something should be used under the plate. Some have a gasket there, some use Sealer 1000 which is now called something else. Scotch #847 or OMC/BRP #776964. But for this particular use some plain ol Permatex avaiation sealer is good enough.

There are other greases but it is very hard to find one as good as Triple Guard. One of the other major outboard mfrs' waterproof grease would be second choice. Plain ol car grease is better than nothing, but not as good as Triple Guard.

If you don't mind water squirting out the seam between the gearcase and exhaust housing you don't need the sealer in there.

All these blanket answers are "in most cases" that is. Your case may vary.

They're all right, especially scaaty and F R (imported or domestic, take your pick). The manual is more like general suggestions than actual rules.* I seem to recall a little packet of grease included in the water pump kit.

Permatex #2 will work just fine between housing & lower unit.

Does the sealer 1000 or 3M#847 harden up or does it stay as a paste?

That little packet of Moly Lube that comes with the water pump is specifically for the top of your driveshaft. A lot of substitutes cannot take the heat and friction.
