Re: sold a boat.........and I still have it!

You're fine...if the marina was going to start charging YOU after the first I'd have done the same thing. He told you he planned to move the boat at the end of this month so something obviously has happened that has him preoccupied. You did hime a favor which by the sounds of it he will probably thank you for an throw you a couple of bucks for your trouble when he finally resurfaces.

The real question is .....how much time has to go buy before you can sell the boat again!!!!

Who's name is the boat in at this time? Without knowing that, none of us can really offer any advice of value.

I would have done the same as you did.

On a negative side I learned from a friends experience that if someone leaves their boat at your dock you don't have the right to touch it. All you can do is take it up in civil court to get them to move it.

But that's not what happened here your just trying not to run up a bill for the guy who may just be sick or something and not able to deal with.

I think it's real cool of you to help him out and wish more people where like that.

Does he live nearby? Surely you have his home address on the bill of sale? If he lives nearby, I'd deliver it on the trailer (he bought the trailer too, right?).

I think the buyer will be very happy with what you did. The only downside for the buyer is that he did not learn how to get it ready for trailering.

Re: sold a boat.........and I still have it!

From what I am reading, I feel you are being more than fair to this guy. The fact you moved the boat from the slip to your driveway shows you are just trying to help this guy out. You are looking out for his interests as a fellow boater and he would have no leg to stand on in court if for some reason he gives grief (I really don't think he would in this case though).
About all you can really do is contact him and see what his situation is. If you cannot contact him, the best you can do is hold onto the boat until he contacts you. Heck, you could charge him rent for storing it for him, but you don't seem that type. Something could have happened, maybe he had a no notice deployment (military?).

So just what is the paperwork situation? Do you still have it, or does he? There should be more people like you. It would be so easy to just leave it there and let the marina take possession, then the guy is really screwed. You just saved him a lot of grief that could be something added to his situation. Let's hope he is OK and comes for the boat soon.

Here we go again :D

With your history, I'd give some thought to getting out of boating and taking up bowling . . . It's gotta be less stressful :D

Sounds to me like you might have to hire a spiritualist to reach this guy in the "afterlife" to find out what he wants you to do with his boat!

This message was sent Friday evening to my work email address, I just got it. Mystery solved. All is well!

Country Bumpkin,

I am in the Florida Keys, and won't be back until late Sunday. If you would go on and pull out and I will come get one day next week.

I appreciate all your help.

Thanks,
Boat Buyer

If its his boat why are you movint it around? Why would you just take it apon yourself to make decisions? What if you did damage to it when you were transporting it? Who would be responsible then? Why is it in your yard when it does not belong to you? Why dont you have a phone number for this guy? Why can you not just go to the motor vehicles to get an address and go and find out what is going on with the guy? If you took it out of "your slip" why would you take it to your house and not the police or somewhere like that as like a lost and found? It in my opinion is an abandoned boat after a certain ammount of time and it is un-lawful for you to be touching someone else's property. I just dont understand how you get yourself into these messes. I would think after that last transaction, that you would not make decisions like this again. Think you need to answer the questions that i just asked to yourself and you will then be able to figure the whole thing out for yourself. I dont agree with what happened though. Just my opinion.

Well, looks like it will all work out for you. This situation just goes to show no matter how much of a gentlemans deal you have, you need a plan in writing for any type of situation that could arise.

A guy that I work with had an aquaintance ask to store his boat in his barn for the winter. He agreed to do it, and asked that the guy give him a little cash here and there. Since October he has given him $50, and that was in December. Hasn't heard from him since, and his phone is disconnected. Now, the guy who has the boat in his barn is moving (only renting the house). He doesn't even know how to get ahold of the guy to let him know!

Re: sold a boat.........and I still have it!

You guys are harsh.

It's no reason to get out of boating or re-evaluate your life or anything. You did the righteous thing to help someone out, yes it can and seems that it will if you go by my life bite you in the a**, but that's no reason not to be a real person. The only people that can change all the stupid stuff out there is the people doing it.

Kind of a bummer he didn't call you before the month was up and put you in that spot.

I still would have done the same thing and pull the boat. To think that you should leave a boat in a slip you rented and call it the marinas problem is weird. Why screw them over because you lost touch with the guy? You brought it there and you told them it would be gone before this date?

You kept your word and that's a good thing for all. If people would stop ditching boats on marinas and running up huge bills they can't afford then maybe the marinas could afford to be cooler to boaters instead of having to wonder if your gonna be the last straw.

You probably should start keeping track of important cell phone numbers though.

Technically you where/ are still in the deal with the guy anyway so you really had every right and even the responsibility to act accordingly.

Deal wasn't just for the purchase of a boat and trailer it was for sailing lessons provided he took advantage of them and storage in your slip (in your possession).

Until he takes possession it's your responsibility, so is the marina deal.

HIt him up for some beer for the extra hassle pulling the the boat without his help and call it good.

Be like going down the street and grabbing a car you had sold and transfered ownership over to someone else.

Except the car was in the driveway of the house he sold at the same time as the car. Escrow is closing and the contract for the house states that the car must be gone. :D

The owner just picked HIS boat up. He was very happy and appreciative of what I did.

To everyone that says 'He was wrong to touch the boat'.

You're all missing one main piece of the puzzle... The buyer never took possession of the boat. He paid for it, but never took possession. Until he takes possession, the original owner is entrusted to do what is deemed "The right thing" to ensure that the property is taken care of. If he didn't, he could be sued for failure to ensure confident transfer... or something like that. Yes, Country_bumpkin could have charged/sued for more money for the extra time and storage in his driveway, but he didn't.

On the other hand, you have to put yourself in the buyers shoes... would you not want C.B. to take the boat out of the slip for you? If it were me, I would have thanked him profusely for this added service, and apologized to him for being so late taking possession.
