solenoid question

attached is the current set up on my 94 50hp johnson.

I am wondering where the red wire attaches to the charging system, assuming that is what it is there for. anyone tell me if it goes to the terminal block? or somewhere else on the motor.

I purchased the motor and the solenoid and the wires were gone so I want to confirm the wright connections and the correct placement of the (charging??) red wire

The starter solinoid should have a small red and black wires on the small terminals. The red comes from the ignition switch and the black is to ground. It should also have two large red wires. One comes from the battery to the solinoid and the other goes to the starter.


In most charging circuits, two wires from the stator go to the AC side of a rectifier or regulator. From the rectifier or regulator, you will have a red wire and a black wire. The black wire goes to ground. The red wire goes, usually through a circuit breaker, to the battery.

The charge circuit and starting circuits are usually mutually exclusive.

You really should provide more info about your motor to get a proper answer to your question.

One thing for sure is that the fuel pump connection as you have it shown is not correct. That connection point should be connected to the ignition switch.

As for the red wire, impossible to predict where to connect it without knowing motor/year etc and where that wire comes from.

Ok so as for the fuel pump that was a assumption.

The Model # is j50tlere

I pick up this motor, had no starter or solenoid(got them now). also there was 4 wires cut near the solenoid.
1 yellow/red
2 reds
1 black
See the attach pic for the exeact wire tht are cut. The fuse wire red was cut.
Could it be that the 2 red wires sould be connected?

Black is ground

Yellow/red is the igition wire(read that on this fourm somewhere)

However when I purchased the solenoid, there was a 12 gauge wire attached to the one of the post(not the starter wire)

see the pic, 2 in the pic are original cut wires and the 3rd red wire is the one came with the soleniod( may not even be required it may be intended to replace one of those cut wires.

Put a meter on the ground and then check each wire as you turn the key to start. The wire that has power when in the start position but not when the key turns back to on is the solinoid power wire.

There should only be one power wire and one ground wire to the solinoid. The other wires may go to the charge circuit.

If you really have a 50 HP Johnson that is fitted with an electric fuel pump you have a potential "bomb". There are many discussions about this on non-ECM (computer) controlled engines so do a search for the reason why. The terminal you have marked as fuel pump should have the wire coming from the "S" terminal on the ignition switch. When you turn the key to START +12 volts hits the solenoid and the starter is engaged as the two large terminals are connected. The red wire in your diagram, if that is indeed the charging wire, should be connected to the same terminal the large battery cable (from the battery POS terminal) is connected to on the solenoid. That's how charging current gets to the battery.

thanks guys, it is actually one red wire it was just cut out from the harness to seem like two and it goes to the pos on the solenoid. found a local guy with the same motor.
