I have a 1961 Johnson 40HP Electric Seahorse (RDS23). Electric starter but no generator/alternator.

My Q for the board - Is there a rebuild kit or maybe swappable parts from another motor that will help me eliminate the need for contacts in my magneto? I'm doing a full re-build and I would like to make it as maintenance-free as possible while I'm already in deep!!

Thanks in advance - Paul

There are such animals out there but I don't know if there is one made for your engine or not. Keep this post close to the top, someone will know for sure.

g'luck & c/6

Hooty

The regular system is pretty darn reliable.
Especially if you rebuild it when doing your rebuild.Parts are readily available at most any good dealer or from NAPA.
I dont have a clue about how long you can go without a mag tune up but ill bet a bunch of years.
How about it guys let TP know what you think.
Am I nuts?

I haven't heard about a solid-state retrofit for a magneto outboard.

Why would you want to change it? You have an extremely reliable setup. These engines can always limp home, running terribly, but will get you back. If a solid state component blows, it's tow time.

I've converted my 1966 car to all solid state for the obvious advantages. But, it's much less critical than a boat stopping dead at sea.

Try NAPA. Seems that I did see one in their marine catalog. I have never used one, or have any knowledge of anyone that has. Check page 91 of their 2002 Marine Catalog. Has a part number of 18-5101. Probably a cross to Sierra also. Let us know!!!
Good Luck...

Thanks Mark,,, That is exactly what I was looking for. Though the ability to "limp home" is a compelling argument, I would like to never have to pull the flywheel again so I'm giving it a shot (after refreshing the magnet and changing to new coils). Time will tell.

Thanks all.
