Can someone explain the wiring going to the solonoid, and the method to check each one. How do you go back to the source of each wire to check it out, especially the two smaller ones on the side of the solonoid.
Thanks
Skip

Are you talking about the starter solenoid, Skip?
What make, model and year engine?

c/6
Hooty

Re: Solonoids

Basically speaking, a solenoid is an electromagnet that pulls a contact disc to connect the main terminals. The small terminals are the electromagnet. Simple enough, positive to one terminal and negative to the other.

When the electromagnet is energized, it pulls a plunger, and attached to the plunger is a heavy copper disc that contacts the big terminals. That allows power from the battery to cross over to the starter. One side to the battery, the other side to the starter. The starter is grounded to the block, as is the negative battery cable, thus completing the circuit.

Typically the power to energize the electromagnet comes from the battery terminal of the solenoid and goes to the ignition switch. When the switch is turned to the start position, power travels to the electromagnet and pulls the plunger which holds the disc that connects the terminals that turns the starter that Merc built.

And the starter turns round and round and round and round. And the starter turns round and round. :D

1972 65 hspr. Evinrude. The two small wires going to the solonoid frayed and I replaced them with two 16 gauge wires. One went to the ignition switch, the other to the safety switch, which is right next to the ignition switch. Still getting nothing. Is the solonoid grounded.by means of the strap that holds it to the block.
Thanks
Skip

Re: Solonoids

The solenoid grounds through that safety switch.

c/6
Hooty

Re: Solonoids

Can the safety switch be bypassed and the ground mounted to the block, to see if the system works and the connection to the switch is the problem.
Thanks,
Skip

Re: Solonoids

It can, but if that works the safety switch should be replaced! Not left out of the circut, without it it will start in gear!

Re: Solonoids

The throttle controled safety switch was eliminated a year or so after your motor. I believe there was a bulletin out saying just to run the wire for the starter solenoid to ground.

Re: Solonoids

Safety switch has about 5 wires going to it. Do you follow them back to the ignition switch and disconnect them there. Ignition switch has five different screws with wires running to each one. Which ones do you really need to keep connected. Does any of these have a bearing on the electric shift, with regard to the connections.

Thanks,
Skip
