Hey All,

i was just checking the gap in my points and setting them to .20 and noticed that the points close before the piston reaches TDC. There's about 1/4" more travel in the piston after the points close. Is this normal or should i be adjusting the gaps so that they make contact once the piston has reached the top of the cylinder?

thanks,
dean

You are not thinking about the ignition advance ...... what you have now is normal. The points are related to the cam on the end of the crankshaft.

The time that the points close is not the point (pun). It fires when they OPEN. WHEN they open in relation to the piston depends on the throttle setting because the armature plate rotates with the throttle.
