I have a 1960 75hp Evinrude. Hasn't been started in a couple years. I've replaced all fuel lines, plugs and wires, cleaned out the powerpack which had some minor rust/dirt inside, new gas (24/1 ratio), inspected and cleaned fuel pump and replaced filter. I removed lower unit and replaced the impellar, lower unit gasket/seal and change the lower unit oil. I had the starter rebuilt also (armature was fried). Problem 1: When I try to start the motor from the switch the starter engages but can't turn the flywheel. Possible short from the switch to the starter I'm assuming? Problem 2: When I try to pull start the motor every couple of pulls or so I get some backfire but thats about all I get. When I pull the plugs out to take a look at them they are clean and don't smell a bit like gas. Could I have powerpack problems or stator problems? And if so how do I check this? A manual is in the mail and I'm trying to do some things before it gets here. Any tips would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
