If you can't format the drive, you can't install the OS.

Well the main thing is could i run stuff like Itunes and my IM... main thing that i use besides the internet e-mail. Most of that stuff is downloadable. One more thing is it possible to download things for linux like photoshop type applications. It doesn't have to be photoshop, or but multimedia players and the like and which version is most used or best or recommended?

IM, yes... Itunes no. The multimedia player will most likely come with the OS install. But there is no linux Itunes client which could be a dealbreaker for you.

I'm not worried about Itunes because i don't use it much to begin with. I have almost 30gigs on my iipod thats enough for me for now. I just need to know how to format the hdd, thats my problem now because i can't boot up the linux while windows is installed and the hdd is installed so i need to be able to format the hdd.

So do you have a hard drive that you can format and put the operating system on?

I have the hard drive i want to format and put it on but I think i need two hdds to format 1 then do whatever with the other, and currently Windows 98 is on that hard drive and I can't format it because windows wont format over itself and I can't run linux with the hdd plugged in because then windows 98 will boot form the hdd and screw up everything because they conflict.

You have to go in and change how the machine boots up.
It now is booting up from the HD, you need ti tell it to boot from disk.
Re-start and push the F12 hotkey as soon as you see the splash screen.
This will take you to the set up mode.
There you will see 3 or 4 lines down where it says something to the effect as boot up sequence, hit enter and it should pop up the drives on your machine with check marks beside them.
You can hit plus or minus to move which ever one is highlighted.
You are changing how it boots.
