Gas fireplace, the mantle keeps the heat off of the tv. No problems, i was worried about the viewing angle but honestly we have not had an issue with, we love it.
I take it you have it tilted enough so its perpendicular to your line of sight?

Hmmm....mine's a gas fireplace, too.

Should I say thanks for the info or "%$^^#@!!!! " 'cause it's probably going to cost me a couple of Gs??

I'll go with the "thanks". :)

I bet it doesn't get too hot. I had a friend that had hers that way. With the viewing angle, my neck hurt after awhile. Sometimes, its your only option.

I can probably just hang a poster or similar and "watch" it for 1/2 hour to check that.
The idea was that it is the best place to get the greatest viewing distance.

When we downsize, my next place will have the TV's selected and be designed and built to suit...:)

An over-the-fireplace is too high for comfortable viewing, from everything I've read on the subject. The top of the screen is supposed to be near eye level.

"I take it you have it tilted enough so its perpendicular to your line of sight?" - Yes it is tilted slightly, Not sure why I did that as it's only a couple degrees but once I put it up it stayed there.

"An over-the-fireplace is too high for comfortable viewing, from everything I've read on the subject. The top of the screen is supposed to be near eye level." I have heard that also but I am at least 14' -15' away when watching it, The room is 24' x 24' - I am sure it is not for everyone but works great for us, When I designed the fireplce I was planning on this from the start and it has worked out good.

That sounds like a really good deal, especially for a samsung. I have trouble when I'm purchasing tv's because I feel like I need to go with a well known brand, but it's usually $100 or $200 more and it kind of bugs me and I keep doing it. I'm looking for a tv for my kids room and I found this site Cheap and Affordable LED TV Deals 2012 - 2013 and I'm considering going with Haier brand which I don't know a whole lot about but I was hoping one of you might have some experience with the Haier brand so I could feel better about my purchase.

I just bought a Vizio from Costco, and love it, great picture, no off axis problems, good price and a 90 no questions return policy and a 2 year warranty from Costco.
