Some questions about early 1990's Merc 135 hp 2.0 litre v6

Hi guys,

I am new to the boating game and have a couple of questions I hope you can help me with.

I recently bought a 18ft Fletcher with a Mercury 135 hp 2.0 litre v6 black max outboard. The engine is believed to be early to mid 1990's model.

Hope you can help!!

The autolube has been disconnected and the previous owner was pre mixing the fuel. The autolube system is still function, well so I've been told. How reliable are these systems? The previous owner stated that he would rather pre mix, but are these systems generally worth while using, and are they generally fitted with an alarm if the oil stops flowing?

How could I possibly find out exactly what year the engine was made? Is it printed on it somewhere, or could this be obtained from the serial number?

What general fuel consumption would you expect from this size engine with a 50 litre tank? I know it depends on how your driving her, but at cruising speed, roughly how many hours of use would you expect?

I've been told by a mechanic that replaced the impellor and t-stats that there is a slight fuel leak either into, or around the carburetor... Is this a common problem, or rather serious?!!

Thanks once again for reading, and look forward to hearing some of your experienced opinions!! :)

1. If the oil pump has been disconnected and run without oil circulating through it, I wouldn't hook it back up. I would, however remove it and replace it with the block off kit. Eventually It'll seize up and shred the plastic gear on the crankshaft into the works. Sometimes it's no big deal, other times all hell breaks loose.

2. The serial number rules on model and approximate year of manufacture. There's a copy on the clamp, and if the power head is original, the core plug on top of the block behind the flywheel may have the s/n on it.

3. You should be able to burn off a full tank of fuel in about an hour at WOT.

4. Any fuel leak is dangerous. I would look into it. Floats sinking, and crud in the needle valves are both common problems. If the engine is a bit older than you think, the lines would probably go to pot because of the ethanol in the fuel. It's not a real big deal, about 50 bucks in parts and a few hours to take it down to the reed plate, go through the carbs and fuel pump, and replace all the fuel lines. Probably cost a few hundred to have a "mechanic" work on it. Get a maintenance manual and have at it. It's really about the simplest mechanical stuff you'll ever work on.

hope it helps

I have a '93 Merc 135HPV6. It too has the Autoblend system disconnected. Premixing the fuel is no big deal, in a 50l tank. You do need to find that fuel leak. I had a leak where the enrichener drew fuel from the top carb. A simple fuel line replacement took care of it.

As John said, you will burn that 50l tank dry in an hour, if you rev her up. You probably need another 50l or more to have a resonable cruising distance.

I have an XR4, and a 27 Gallon tank. (102 l) I can burn it off in less than 2 hours. To put it in perspective, I can cross Mille Lacs lake and return 4 times while I burn that fuel.

Standard fuel consumption for most outboard engines at WOT is 10% of the horse power rating in gallons per hour. In your case avg. WOT consumption is 13.5 gallons per hour. With your 30L tank at WOT you are looking at about 36 minutes of endurance. I would agree with those who suggest you get another 30L tank or a whole new single tank with double or more your current capacity.
