I have posted about this last week but only one or to comments and they got me no where. First off its a 99 Johnson 70hp psi in each is 130. The primer ball gets hard and stays hard the fuel filter is new the plugs are new and are champs. Now for my problem. It starts right up with very little cranking it idles great but some times and not all the time when I put it into gear and go to give it gas it bogs down and dies now it always starts right back up but I will rev it and try it maybe 4 times them it's like something starts to work and I can give it gas in gear likes nothing's wrong. I do see a lot of smoke when I'm revving it up. I really need to fix this it sucks when I'm trying to get it on the trailer or docking. I pulled the plugs the time befor last and they were black on one side and coffee color on the other. The motor will troll as long as I need it to once it's running and it won't stall out but once I shut it of and restart it and go to move is when it bogs down. I can throttle down when it's bogging and it stays running it just won't take the gas.

could be a weak fuel pump, or an air leak in your fuel lines, try to barrow a different fuel hose and tank, check all the fuel lines and connections for cracks, hose clamps etc. Have you cleaned the carbs? could be many other things but thats where I would start.

Ok but why would it just start running ok after I play with it ? If it had a carb problem or a air leak or fuel pump wouldn't it do it all the time ?

Could it be that the idle is set too low? That could be a problem.

Do you know where the idle adjustment screw is located? Turning clockwise will increase idle rpm.

Do you know the procedure for adjusting the throttle linkage?

I'm not quite sure how to adjust the throttle I do know that when I got the boat the throttle was going to far and I had a marine mechanic back it off so that the carb throttle plates are now wide-open at wide open throttle that that's the only adjustment he made. And it does seem to idle low. I did have one problem a few months back when fuel line popped off and I did not see it and needless to say the vro pump kept Pumping oil. Do you think maybe the plugs I just oil fouled and if so why would it run great once I get the little hick up out of it?

DAN i dont know much but have ideas, might check your timing advance lever that its not sticking when problem is present or the cam follower roller sometimes the outside roller comes off and just leaves the hub on the shaft hard to notice good luck :joyous:

I am by no way a mechanic and my "lingo" may be wrong but I had the same exact problem with an older Evinrude and someone here helped me figure out what the problem was.

I had the same exact symptoms as you are having..had been checking all fuel lines etc. then I was directed to the timing advance arm and where it goes up under the flywheel..the timing advance arm was moving but the part under the flywheel (timing advance is what I 'think" it's called) was gummed up from sitting so long so it was not moving.

I sprayed wd-40 where I could and moved it by hand back and forth until it moved along with the timing advance arm / linkage.
Problem was solved and I was a happy boater.

At that time I didn'e even know that the timing advance was supposed to turn / rotate so had no idea to look for it. It basically flooded the engine out when I advanced the throttle in gear...idled just great though and started fine.

Not saying that you are not correct on this...just want to be sure you know that the arm will move freely but what it's connected to on the top of the motor may not be rotating as it should...that's what stumped me since I didn't know to look for it.

You may need someone else to move your throttle lever all the way down...have them go back and forth and watch the linkage where it goes up towards the top of the motor...the linkage will be making a timer base rotate when throttle is applied after about the half way point or so...you must give it decent amount of throttle to see this happening...just like when you are trying to take off from an idle...it can be slow though, no need to "punch" it.

Again, your motor may not even have this so I could be wrong..but I do know that it's common problem and had me thinking my motor was going to cost me a lot for repair. So if nothing else maybe this info will help someone else.

I also found a link to another topic that talks about his..with a photo showing where the linkage goes.
http://forums.iboats.com/forum/engi...1255-gas-feed-problem-with-1974-evinrude-70hp

Good luck on this either way...I just got my 70 HP going after 3 days of trying to troubleshoot why it wouldn't start..ended up being a bad ground wire on the solenoid..EVEN THOUGH I had checked and cleaned them at least 3 times...so irritating when that happens....lol The ground in my case was hooked to a bolt hole that just had no grounding ability for some reason...wire was good..had sanded and cleaned all connections but still nothing until I moved the wires connection location.

Guess you aren't going to tell us what gap you are running....
Gap spec is 0.030".....but for a lot of trolling, many have had good luck with opening the gap out to 0.035 or even 0.040 to reduce fouling.
Of course you need to be checking wear more often as you have less leeway for wear.

im gonna say your running lean, I would try this next time it happens just to make sure....prime the bulb and see if it helps....if the bulb is already hard then it will not help.. you might try choking it while launching to see if that helps...I was always told if pumping the primer helps its the pump or air leak and if choking helps its the carbs....

Breaking down under the load of being put in gear, could be bad/fouled plugs, bad plug wires or connections, weak coils/spark.....some things to check.....

The primer dose stay hard and I do believe choking it dose make it start faster .

I'd try opening up the plug gap a bit. See if you get any improvement.
