start with the basics. Check compression, then spark(with adjustable tester in a dark garage etc to be able to see spark...and any arcing from coil).

If you have good spark and good compression, and spark is advancing properly...then check fuel supply. If you bump the choke(while underway) and motor perks up...its a carb problem. Wouldn't hurt to run on a different fuel tank(and diff bulb) to rule out bad tank and/or bulb.

Am I understanding this thread?
Your motor runs fine....except after a lengthy time trolling....and the plugs have fouled.

Try it with the 0.035 gap....if there is noticeable improvement, you could try 0.040.

Yes the motor runs great after it's hick up after trolling or restart. The idle screw is the lower one on the arm right. so if I just turn it in it will raise the idle but not change anything else correct?

Typically it should jump 7/8ths air gap. Look for a bright white/blue "snappy" spark.

I'm having spark issues with the '82 Evinrude 75hp I just picked up. The spark DOES jump the gap...but the spark is a light whitish color and def NOT "snappy". So, I'm replacing the coils. They are arcing externally also...so it's a no-brainer for me.

I just went out and pulled off the top to wire pluges for the top coils and the little clip on terminals to the wires are full of rust. They look like small spark plug tops and are all rusty.

That's good news(in a sense)....you've found the problem. Or at least, part of the problem.

I just cleaned them all up and used dialectic grease on them but why would it only have the problem sum times and more so when I restart the engine. O and once I touched the wire it would not spark at all.

Just to clarify the wires with the rust are the I guess power wire to the coil not the plug wire. It's a orange wire with a spark plug looking end. So will that being rusted heart the output of the coil.

Electricity is a weird thing. It's normal for electrical gremlins to me intermittent.
