I recently purchased a 1984 skeeter bass boat with a a yamaha motor that had a 175hp cover. When I started looking for parts and getting into discussions on this forum I discovered I had a 220 Hp V-6 special. The title has 220 on it as well. The dealer wrote up the deal as a 175 and the maximum Hp for the skeeter is 175. What can I do. I have got both the boat and motor in better condition than when I purchased them and have spent over a grand. Does anyone know a source or site that does some trading. I'm willing to trade the 220 for a 175 so I can get insurance for bass tournaments.

No insurance company will take him. ZmOz, Overpowerd. You can try your local paper, Ebay, etc. You need to stay local> shipping will kill you!
Tim

Wrong. Many, many insurance companies will insure overpowered boats for a slight increase in premiums. Mine does. As long as it's legal in your particular state, and it is in most, and it's not ridiculously overpowered, (this isn't) you're fine.

ZmOz, No i'm not wrong! Read his post again he plainly stated he couldn't get insurance. I know that. I'm overpowerd too and insured.
Tim

He can get insurance just like everyone else if he looks, unless there's a law in oklahoma that says overpowered boats cannot be insured, which I highly, highly doubt...

Some states won't let you register a watercraft if it is overpowered. I know that for a fact!
Tim

Part of the rules in many tourneys, no hp over what the boat is rated for.

Check around with the local dealers, marinas and outboard engine shops. One or more should be willing to trade. Also check the paper. If you try ebay make sure you can drive to sellers location and actually "kick the tires". I have heard good and bad things about buying engines on ebay. Know what you are getting into.

You may also want to talk to a lawyer about your legal options. If the dealer said he was selling a 175 and gave you something else, he may be liable to make it right.

If the boat happens to be 20' or longer, the HP rating is advisory only. Once you get over 20', overpowering isn't illegal.

On a side-note, if there is ever an accident, the guy you bought it from could be held liable. If he misrepresented it to you or failed to disclose the overpower, the liability ball is in HIS court.

It's not illegal on smaller boats either, except but a VERY few states...Oklahoma most likely not included.

Re: Someone Sold me an oversized motor

stop all the bickering and arguing.

just take it to any yamaha dealer and have the motor " de-tuned" or " de-rated" back down to 175

problem solved
