Hello all - wondering if anyone would know if a Volvo - AQ 125 with a 270 outdrive is a good reliable power plant? I know that power will be under, given that this power train is in a 22 foot boat. But I'm not looking to go fast & I gotta believe that this 4 cylinder is very economical on fuel. Engine is a 1982 with 430 hours - compression test (I'm told is tight) Bellows has been changed on the outdrive. This power plant is in a 22 foot Bayliner Trophy HardTop that looks like it was stored for half its life. I will post info on the boat in the proper place.

Thankyou for your help

Ideally, use a bore scope thru a spark plug hole to check the cylinder walls for signs of rust which will wear down the rings, cause the motor to use oil then begin to lose compression.

If the motor was 'winterized' and fogged prior to storage each time then I wouldn't have any problem with it.

That Volvo in a 22 ft boat won't set any speed records, but it will get you there, and back!

Replace the impeller, carefully check/replace any and all belts and hoses, change oils, clean the carb and enjoy.

If I forgot anything important I expect Don to step in and set us straight.

Somewhere here on iboats is a thread titled something like 'Awakening a sleeping motor', find it, hopefully one of the others knows where it is and will provide you a link to the step by step guide on what to check, service or replace before hitting the water with a boat or motor that has been in extended storage.

That motor/drive is a good unit. The problems is it's 20+ years old.If it has been taken care of and YOU can take of it yourself, then consider buying it.You don't say where your from.If it was used in salt water then the corrosion is probably worse than fresh.
The parts for that boat are VERY expensive. The manifold is over 300$ so is the starter and the alt. The heat exchanger is costly too!!!The carb should you need one would be impossible to find.So be very carefull and have a mechanical survey done by a good mech.
I also learned that you use Volvo props only and the performance will be better.Jerry

Boat has been used only in fresh water ( great lakes) It also is the engine that has its own cooling - Sucks that parts will be expensive & maybe even hard to find. I really like the hard top, along with a nice custom rear enclosure that when the door is shut the boat is totally closed off to the elements. Also has windows that slide open in this enclosure. This is a custom wood ( Teak or Mahagony construction) Very cool & maybe a deal maker. if I can get the boat for around $3,800 I would probably go ahead.
He is asking $5,500 but I told him he can keep the brand new planer boards & 2 non working electric downriggers so that should help in reducing the price. However he just installed a $1,000 dollars worth of electronics & 2 of the 4 batteries are brand new & of course the complete redo of the bottom was also time consuming & expensive.

Sounds like the Volvo AQ125 is a very reliable & long running engine - as long as proper maintenance has been done & in this case it appears so
