Originally founded in 1565, St. Augustine is nation's oldest permanently occupied city. It has been under three different governments Spain 1565-1763 and 1784-1821, Britain 1763-1784, & the U.S. 1821-present. Was a part of the Confederacy 1861-1862. Tons of history here & a lot of cool stuff to see.

Below are a few shots I took yesterday from the Mantanzas River/Intercoastal. One is of Castillo de San Marcos built in 1695. The Bridge Of Lions, which is being restored, was built in 1927. Once completed the temp bridge behind it will be dismantled & taken out to sea to create an artificial reef.

West Bloomfield, MI has 26 lakes and almost 150 ponds, which is the second highest number of lakes and ponds in a township in the United States, after a township in Wisconsin.

Orchard Lake, a 795 acre lake bordering West Bloomfield, has a 35 acre island called Apple Island right in the center. It's a geological rarity to have an island that size in a relatively small inland lake. Apple Island has a lot of history, populated by Native Americans for thousands of years, and Chief Pontiac is rumored to be buried there. That's probably not true, but he did stay on the island and probably plotted the siege of Fort Detroit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_Fort_Detroit) from there. It became an apple orchard later, hence the name of the island (and the lake). The island's been an unpopulated nature reserve since 1970. People are only officially allowed on it once a year on a tour-- my family and I went on the tour a couple years ago and it was cool and spooky-- a thickly forested island with ruined foundations of a few houses in the middle of this busy sports lake. There's a hill in the middle of the island called "Chief Pontiac's Mound" where he's supposedly buried.

St Johns river is the second largest river that flows NORTH.

Gloucester - Cape Ann

Population approx. 31,000, settled in 1623, known as America's oldest Seaport. Clarence Birdseye, inventor of a process for quickfreezing known as flash frozen today opened the first processing plant of frozen foods here in Gloucester, today that company is part of the General Foods Corporation. Along Stacy Boulevard is one of the most famous statues in America, "The Man at the Wheel," which is a memorial to over the 5,000 fishermen "They That Go Down To The Sea In Ships." Also the movie "Perfect Storm," based on the true story of three storms that came together in 1991 taking the lives of sword fishermen was filmed here. Gloucester is also known as the oldest working Art Colony in the country and the first Universalist Church of America was founded here and the church is still standing. There are two bridges that connect Gloucester to the mainland, one being a drawbridge which is the 2nd busiest drawbridge in the country. Oh, the main bridge that comes into the city is known as "The Bridge To No Where," next stop from here is England. We have Whale Watching and some of the best recreational Deep Sea Fishing along the Atlantic coast.

Nice pics! I'll have to dig up some pics of it sitting in Evansville. It sits right on the edge of the channel.... where the entrance of Inland Marina is. Its unreal how big that thing is when your 20 feet away from it going into the marina.

Salmon Arm BC, according to wikipedia, has the worlds longest wooden warf.
And I was told the Shuswap lakes has 4 arms and there is over a 1000km of shoreline.

eastern north dakota - right now we got nothin', could just as well be bumf$#&, north pole. It's a hateful place for about 7 months. No ocean, no lakes, no palm trees, no riff raff. Oh, and our all time record low temperature is right at about -43 degrees F. We weren't quite that today.. something like -15 F. You gotta love it! I don't.

So why do you stay there? Is it because you got land given to you based on how far you can run?

I'm embarrassed to say that there's nothing naturally cool about my area. Everyone knows about the greatest spectacle in racing but that's man made.

Whirlpool Rock..........its on the rock river just downstream from Grand Detour Illinois. The river takes a hard turn there to the north and there is a permenent(even in the winter) whirlpool there. The hole there is right at 50' deep. I believe it's the deepest hole in the river.

The rock is a limestone "cliff" and there are plenty of Swallows that nest in holes in the cliff. Some days fishing there in the spring, you can see well over a hundred swallows darting about the water.

Oh yeah, I forgot..............I have seen BIG tree limbs sucked down into that whirlpool that I never saw come back up!!

Also have been told that we are at the very northern end of the sonoran desert/great western desert, well at least the okanogan valley is which we can see from our place.

I live on an island in the North Atlantic Ocean. Newfoundland is also known as the 'rock' for the glacier mountains here. We are also known for our large moose population. Last year alone there were 660 moose vehicle accidents. Moose here are known as Newfoundland speed bumps. Moose season last 3 months. Also we are recognized or our Atlantic Salmon fishing. Also we have beautiful mud trout, brookies, and German browns along with rainbow trout, sea trout and char. We are also know for our bountiful supply of mosquitoes and black flies. In June and early July we see tons of iceburgs. One more thing, we are also know for our Newfoundland Screech, rum. It is gross, oh so gross.

That was my great grandfather.

O.k. some things we do have.. Montana on one side and Minnesota on the other. What was the tallest tower in the world (formerly KTHI now KVLY TV Tower) .. and is now considered the 3rd tallest structure in the world at 2063 feet is located near here in Blanchard, ND. And we do have at least 1 less big whitetail walking around the area.

Sorry to burst the bubble of the local Chamber of Commerce but there are a bunch of rivers that flow north, longer than your St Johns 310 miles.

Used to live near the Red River, which I knew was longer, and of course there is the Nile.

After a little research, I came up with this list

The north end of the Island was known for whaling. The bays use to run red. Now we can go out and watch the whales in aw and they don,t need to fear man hunting them in Canadian waters.

Racine County Wi, Home of SC Johnson company, maker of alot of household products, sucks more water out of lake Michigan than most cities. Parent company of Hummingbird fish finders. They have a company store and outlet here, got a great price on mine. Nestle's chocolates is here as well as some Dallas cowboy quarterback I think his name is tony something or other.
We also have some of the best coho fishing in the country right here.

Used to live near the Red River, which I knew was longer, and of course there is the Nile.

After a little research, I came up with this list

Just had to add the Mackenzie river, 1783km, from Great Slave lake to the Bearing sea. Did a canoe trip up there in the early eighties and got lost in the delta for two days The total river system extends over 4250 km (tributaries).
