and a pic of it slid lateraly, starboard....

what are the ramifications of this? both fiber washers are installed.... my guess is that if i installed 1 extra fiber washer ea. side. i'd take up the slack about perfect........ ideas? or a non issue? lastly, port hinge pin slides in w/o force......

Sounds like you have a worn bellhousing... An extra washer each side will reduce that and maintain the bellhouing central. Have a look and see if you can see if one side is worn more than the other. Hinge pin loose, or just right. It shouldn't take much to drive the pins in... That's way there is a 'nail' there. That's a locking pin.

i don't remember seein much wear on the bellhousing achris. it's put together now of corse.. i do have this... my guess it's could be attibuted to this side to side motion of the bellhouseing...

wear on the drive at the gimble ring........

so it would not be a bad idea to do a couple more fiber washers to get central location? if i can get thems fiber washers....... glad to hear it don't take much to get thems pins in... the port one almost came out w/o any tool. the starboard one came out with a slam hammer, with a real mild slam or two..... pushed the port one in for install, the starboard one a tap with a hammer i believe......nailed em..... no slop that i can feel other than the lateral motion....

I wouldn't add any extra spacers to the bellhousing. The slack needs to be taken care of on the ears of the gimbal ring where the contact the drives upper gear housing. This is what keeps the drive from side to side movement when the drive is down. The newer drives (Gen II's) have plastic wear pads so there isn't metal to metal contact like that.
If you had extra shims to the bellhousing, you will be warping the bellhousing a little bit more when the boat is in the water and running. Which will make the bellhousing problem worse.
Just leave it alone would be my suggestion.

PS: Those nails get replaced everytime I take one apart.

well, i surely don't want to make the issue worse..... and bein lazy. perhpas i'll go with the notion of doin nothing then.... would it be benificial to try and engineer some plastic shims to glue on to the gimble ring? (how i'd do that i've no idea) or back to just leave well enough alone.....

i woulda liked to do that. but thems small nails is nla..... is there a sorce for them that i'm not aware of. or do ya just bore em out to fit the larger nails that are still available?

I agree with Don on the side to side to side play, but I don't think they would hurt as long as they do not need to be jammed in....
I don't see why the right sized cotter pin would not work if the pins were unavailable......;)
