Something I noticed on Georgia registration form, anyone know about this?

I decided to start the process of registering my latest project and printed the registration forms from Georgia's DNR website. I noticed something on the form I hadn't seen before (maybe it was there all along and I just hadn't been paying attention). There's a box that says MANUFACTURE SOURCE and the choices are 1) Factory Built 2) Rebuilt 3) Home Built.

Factory Built and Home Built are easily understood, but I can't find anything that defines "Rebuilt" as far as its use on this form. Anyone have information on this - as it pertains to Georgia boat registration?

That's a good one, Wrench. I looked at my registration card and it has type with homebuilt as one of the classes, but no rebuilt class.

I looked around too and didn't find anything. Without calling DNR, I'm guessing it means either a salvage by insurance definition or a boat with no paperwork trail back to the last registered owner. All guesses on my part.

Another guess. How about an added bow flair or swim platform to change the regisrtered length?

maybe the insurance company had written it off and someone has restored or rebuilt it, like a car that has been written off must be reported as such.

That'd be my guess. In FL if a vehicle is deemed 'totalled' by the ins co it becomes a "salvage vehicle". Literally. The owner or finance co or ins co must surrender the title to the state within 72 hrs. Once processed that title ceases to exist. It's now branded a "total loss vehicle".

That would be my guess as the number of boats totaled by Sandy make their way around the US. Of course, many of those are simply sold as used...

rebuilt is simply a "branded" title... gives a buyer a warning that the item was rebuilt after being a salvage.

not all states brand boat titles... indiana for example does not... sink it, burn it, sink it again, still has a clean title

Funny you should mention that. Ironically my newest shop neighbor has a few NY boats from Sandy spilling over onto my property. A Sea Ray 268 & a Formula 272 to name a couple. According to him he's gonna make a tonna money fixin em up. Well according to him he also owns property on Boca Grande & is building a house in the Bahamas. But all is see & hear is BS?

Some will make money, most will not. The longer they sit the lower the probability of making a dime. If worth fixing insurance companies did that. When repairs cost more than the value of the boat~~~ your neighbor bought salvage. Those bought quickly and took care of submerged motors quickly may have something but those that submerged and not properly taken care of quickly are junk. Your neighbor must believe he can do what others cannot as he is providing labor. Some Sandy boats were not sunk but have considerable fiberglass damage. Some had little damage but were still not worth the cost to repair. Maybe he plans on selling and hiding in the Bahamas before new owners find all the hidden problems.

Sandy produced many good buying opportunities, if you know what to look for. For every boat that was severely damaged, there were 9 that were totalled for gouges in the fiberglass and torn-off rub rails. Insurance adjusters were brought in from all over the country. There were just too many damaged boats and not enough time and manpower to do proper 'adjustments.'

My boat stayed in the water and was unhurt. I know this is heresy, but sometimes I wish it'd gotten damaged. It was insured for an agreed value of much more than I'll get when I sell it.

the rebuilt option is a good method to title those old "grandpa" boats that never had one, and a means to get around the idiotic title requirements for small boats. Homemade means built from scratch to me.

How much rebuilding you have to do to qualify? let your conscience be your guide.

No doubt you're correct, IF a title were required. Remember that we're talking about a Georgia registration application, and Georgia doesn't title boats. (It sure would make things simpler if boat registration/title laws were consistent throughout the country.)

Sure! Why not go ahead and make it a federal agency while we're at it?

I dunno. I kinda like things the way they are. Confusion is good ...

Yup. Same thing happened down here after Charly in '04. The 'adjusters' were totalling everything in sight.

That's ridiculous, nobody suggested that nor would it be needed. The states have uniform standards for car registration and titling, that's all that would be needed to make boat owner's lives easier when buying or selling out of state.
