OK, I know I am sort of a new guy around here who has been stirring up the mud a little, Hopefully in a positive way.

Here is an experience I had with flares last year that just might open a few eyes.

I planned a little Flare awareness cruise for 21 members of the Yacht Club I Manage.

I called the Local marine police, coast guard, Harbor Master, Harbor Management Commission and a few other local yocals to let then know that a Yacht Club Launch, 26 ft in length would be partaking in a signal flare testing and demonstration cruise at the entrance of the harbor on date and time specified.

It was a typical Saturday with some 20 or more boats doing usual boat stuff. There we were out of the channel but in plain sight on a beautiful day.

We must of shot off 150 flares of every shape and size. From the little plastic gun to the big aluminum $85 a pop ones.

Here are the results/conclusions

a. only one boat out of the 20 plus boats in visual contact approached us to ask if we were in distress. The rest had no clue.

b. the plastic shotgun kind with the 5 shot stripper clip barely shoot higher than the fly bridge of most boats.

C. If you ever need flares, you need a whole bunch apparently to attract any attention. Use the VHF or Cell and shoot off when you have visual contact with the authorities.

D. the big aluminum tube flares are the best, especially if you are any distance away from shore. Some of the ones we tested were over 19 years expired and still were brilliant.

E. I would say carry more flares or keep you old ones as spares. When you buy flares, make sure you are buying the freshest ones on the shelf.

It's good to know how a flare gun feels or a how to shoot a flare off ahead of time. Be careful and stay safe yall

Re: Something you should know about flares

Thank you POPEYE,

I have been boating for over fifty years and I am on my twenty-ninth boat. Much of what I do is off shore. I carry an EPIRB, life raft, three VHFs, Sat phone, Cell phone, 3 VHFs, etc. I religiously test all of these. However, I have never tested my flares nor have I ever had the need to use them. I think we all presume that flares do what they are supposed to do, attract attention. Your advice is priceless.

I can?t wait for tomorrow to try my flares.:)

Drew

... perhaps, maybe some called in on the marine radio to inform local services of a distress signal from your yatch club attendees. lets hope anyway

Had the VHF on scan, Am riding buddy of local Police Chief...Nope

Perhaps it looked like fireworks, all red, all coming from one boat.

The 4th of July between 9pm and 10:30pm is national get rid of old flares time. However I would still contact your local policing agency and see if they are aware of the situation.
If I'm not mistaken they can only be fired on a horizontal plane, away from the shoreline ( that's a no brainer ) and have certain restrictions as to which ones can be legally dischared. The rest need to be sent to the Fire Dept. or local USCG Station. I'm pulling this from my old head concerning Florida laws.
As I mentioned - I'd still do a local check. You're discharging a firearm no matter how you want to look at it.

They do expire, I had a bunch of hand held ones that were more then 8 years old. During the last fireworks display (May 24 weekend) I figured I'd use them up and get new ones. Not a single one actually fired...they were all dud. Keep that in mind...

Maybe I won't try them tomorrow. :(

On this note, I am a retired Division Chief from Miami Dade Fire Rescue in Florida and to the best of my knowledge, as of July 2003 (my retirement date), we did not accept ordinace of any kind for disposal. In this regard, I think you may be misinformed.

With respect,
