Re: '76 Evinrude 200Hp X Flow

Cruising along at about 4000RPM and everthing seemed fine. Slowed down and the engine sounded like big bolts rattlin' around in a coffee can. Pulled the cowling and the linkage between the control arm and the timing ring had come off so the timing just went where ever it wanted to go. The compression is still good (110-115) in all six cylinders so the pistons and bore are o-k.
I'm guessing a rod bearing. Anybody else have a clue, guess or idea?

Thx.

c/6

Hooty

Howdy, Hooty.

What you heard could have been preignition.
Do a link 'n' synch and see what results you get.

Good luck. :)

Hey JB,
Thanks for gettin' back to me.
I thought MAYBE that might be it to, but when I pulled the plugs and spun it for the compression test, there was a definite knock/rattle. Somethin's busted.

c/6

Hooty

Sorry to hear of this Hooty. Maybe you lost a reed valve? Could be making noise as it tries to exit. I think I would start with pulling the heads, then maybe the intake manifold, to check for a loose reed block. Maybe its in the lower unit? could separate and then spin again. I would try to work my way in, before going for the complete teardown, maybe we get lucky here!

Yo evin, Good ta hear from ya lad.
I hadn't thought about tha reeds. They had to take a beatin' too. What I can't figure out is why that little linkage came loose. I'm wondering if the timing ring stuck and when I backed out of it, the linkage pulled out. I'll check that in the A.M. also. I think I will start with the carbs and check the reeds first. Sure would save Hooty a lot of work.
I'll keep ya posted.

c/6

Hooty

Re: Something's Busted

O-k, here's an up-date.
Removed the carbs, intake manifold and reed plate. Everything looks brand new. Got the heads off and noticed a couple of things. Nr. 2 cylinder has some minor scoring but it MAY have been left from last re-build because the compression was good on all six cylinders ( 110-115 ). and the cross-hatching can still be seen. The other thing I noticed was the amount of side to side piston movement in the cylinders. How much is acceptable?
At this point of the tear-down does anyone know of a way to check the rod bearings at the crankshaft and/or wristpin?
How about Dhadley or any of the other 'rude wizards. Got any tips?

TIA

c/6

Hooty

Re: Something's Busted

you have the heads off all you have to do is bring each piston up to just about the top dead center and move the flywheel back and forth and see if the pston move just move the wheel abit if the pistondoes not move the same ass the fly wheel you hve a bad rod

Re: Something's Busted

When I rock the flywheel ( cw - ccw etc. )nr. 1 piston moves up and down like it should but the other five don't move until the flywheel has traveled 5/8" on the circumference of the flywheel.
Any thoughts (crankshaft)?

c/6

Hooty

One at a time bring each piston about half way up the cylinder. Rotate the flywheel back and forth slightly. The piston at that point should move exactly with the flywheel. At top and bottom dead center the flywheel will move slightly without the piston moving as the rod moves from one side to the other (piston changing directions).

Good luck!

Re: Something's Busted

Hey Dhadley,
All the piston movement or non-movement was/is in mid stroke.
What do you think is wrecked?

c/6

Hooty

Re: Something's Busted

If, in mid-stroke, the crank moves without the piston - most likely it's a rod bearing. It could be a wrist pin bearing or even a wrist pin loose in the piston. Lets hope it's not a rod bearing.

If the motor was propped out at around 5000, it may be a wrist pin coming out of the piston. Let's hope that's it and the crank is still OK.

Let us know when you get it apart.

Good luck!

now i could be totaly wrong but have you pulled the fly wheel to see if anything in there could be makeing your noise

Yep. Flywheel is off and along with the heads, intake and reed plate. We'll know Sunday for sure what's wrong.

Thx. & c/6

Hooty
