Re: Something's Busted

Well gang, it's a busted crankshaft. Parted right at the nr.2 journal. I'd like to post fotos but it's such a big deal and I don't know how. I'll email 'um ( the fotos ) to someone and let them post 'um if you like.
I think everything else is salvageable except for a set or two of rob bearings and maybe a set of wrist pin bearings.
What I'm looking for now is a new or re-built crankshaft and I really would like some input about the re-built ones. Are they any good? Who sells good ones? Whats the going price for one?
Any and all information and opinions will be appreciated.

TIA & c/6

Hooty

Call jack at Superior Marine. He has good cranks at reasonable prices. 800-338-9281 and tell him I said hello. He'll get you going.

Let us know how you make out!

Re: Something's Busted

Dhadley,
I talked to Jack at Superior Marine and he's a real ace guy. He thinks a lot of you to. That's where I'll be getting the crankshaft. What I'm wondering now is what else to replace. The engine had maybe a hundred hours on it so everything that the busted crankshaft didn't wreck, I'm o-k with. The question is what do you think or how can I check what else may need replacing.

The other question is did you ever know Bob, Dorothy and Guy Hadley?

Email reply if you like to: jehart1@attbi.com

Thanks Hadley & c/6

Hooty

If the compression was good and even on all cylinders you can use the old pistons and rings, but I would hone the cylinders and replace the rings since you need to pull the pistons for a good inspection. Check the condition of all bearings for signs of pitting. Caged bearings make reassembly much easier. I would also remove the wrist pins to check those bearings also. The most important part is cleaning before assembly.

Re: Something's Busted

I would probably replace the rod on the journal that broke (or at least look at it real close). As suggested, I would re-ring it at least after using a brush hone or plateau hone. That is if, after measuring the cylinders with a dial bore gauge, it's still in spec. Since you will have it so far apart anyway and you are going to spend the money for rings, I might look at boring it to .020 and have a full life cycle in it at that point. A 100 hours is nothing for a 2 stroke so it may still may very well be in spec.

I knew of a Bob Hadley (I think he was in ST. Petersburg, FL). Years ago my dad was a distributor for Starcraft campres and I seem to remember dad selling campers to him.

Glad Jack could help you out.

Let us know how you make out!

Re: Something's Busted

Tomorrow I'm gonna measure the bores and see if oversizing is necessary or not. The cross-hatching from the last re-build is still visible. I'll replace all the crankshaft end rod needles and wrist pin needles in nrs.1 & 2. for sure. Also going to drive up and talk to the wrench who did the last re-build and who I bought the engine from. That will help me decide about the center and head bearings.
I'll keep ya'll posted.

Thx & c/6

Hooty

I've got a question. I'm gonna replace nr.1&2 rods and bearings. How do I get the old bearings out of the cages? Do they push out? Towards the inside or outside?

TIA & c/6

Hooty

They dont. You can reuse them as is. If you decide to relace them, there is another style that are loose called "full compliment" bearings. Most everybody preferes the caged style like you have. E/J have went back to the caged style also.

Good luck!

Re: Something's Busted

Got the pistons, rods and crankshaft out and found a grove in the block about .020 deep x the width of the seal ring in the webbing (my term) between nr. 1 & 2 cylinders. This is right where the seal ring fits. How bad is it?

c/6

Hooty

Dang it, that should read "groove in the block".
Admin. 5 should install a think checker.

Thx & c/6

Hooty

Re: Something's Busted

Since the crankshaft spins inside the seal rings, do you think I could put JB Weld in the gouged-out groove in the block, put the crankcase assembly in, and bolt down crank case and let it sit until JB Weld sets up and then finish assembling?

Thx. & c/6

Hooty

Re: Something's Busted

Hooty, i really feel sorry for you, I had bad luck too, but on less expensive motors.

I have no experience with that kind of fix.

To mee it looks like these between lower housing seals are kind of brass, forged into the alloy, but i dont know. Is is for sure that leak will effect at least iddling on the two cylinders. I dont like the thought of hardened JB Weld ( similar to Plastic Padding ? ) breaking loose in there and getting trapped between piston/cylinderedges or above pistons in compression stroke. One of my friends have a 60HP lying that got something up in comb chamber and banged off the head. Id rather get a mashineshop to turn and split a new seal from brass and glue it in with JB Weld, at least it wount be able leave its place. someone else must have experience in this. Schematic or Dhadley ??
