Somethings in life are just plain arduous!

Such is the case in trying to teach Mrs WO how to navigate what I call the computer index. I am trying to teach her how to properly save things in the proper spot then how to find those spots so she can copy them and paste them to our external hard drive.

I struggle with many things computer but the 'index' is so simple and logical as to defy the average mind! (I guess)

That brings me to this. I know that Outlook Express buries your address book. It would be nice if it could be copied and saved to the external hardrive like you would for your 'favorites'

Any hints here?

C:\Documents and Settings\{user}\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\outlook\outlook.pst

That's the default file and location. If it isn't there, search for *.pst till you find it. All the outlook information is in that one file.

hope it helps

There is also the Import/export wizard on the file menu. I don't believe that will save all your emails though, just the contacts, but I'm not certain.

Interesting quirk with pst file, if the file gets to large, I believe over 1gb, it will cause outlook to hang up. Found that out when the CEO/Owner of my company hadn't deleted any emails in nearly 10 years.

Three points.

1) Not sure what you mean by "bury"?

2) Not sure what you mean by "external hardrive" or what "favorites" has to do with this....unless you are just saving a backup of "favorites"

3) Not sure why you want to save an extra copy of address book....unless just as a backup.

Because of above, I am not sure if my answer is what you are looking for....but...

There is an "export" function in OE that will save a copy of your address book as a text file which can be imported by other e-mail programs.

Open OE, click "file" in the task bar, then "export"...then it will walk you through the rest of the process.

If that does answer your question, I don't need any of the answers to those questions....;)

I am also a bit puzzled with the phrase "simple and logical" and the word "wife" being used in the same post....

See the attached....

The file size limit was just under 2 GB. If it gets oversized, outlook basically loses it's mind. If you want to keep more information, you can create additionally files, named as you wish, and move e-mails to it.

Microsoft has tools available to help. One will repair a pst file, and the other will arbitrarily cut enough off the end of an oversized file so that what's left is repairable.

Allowable file size has been drastically increased in the latest releases of outlook.

To answer the original question, all the information is in the outlook.pst file. This includes mail, contacts, mail accounts, etc. It can be saved to any media just like any other file. All you have to do to restore all that information to a new outlook installation is copy the pst file to the default location. It's no big deal to include the pst file in any backup routine.

I maintain about 60 workstations, mostly operated by the computing equivalent of a "wife".

hope it helps

...as TF speculated my only purpose was for backup copies, of various data, to an external USB harddrive.

Then the Export function should do fine.

.wab is Windows Address Book. Both have it. If you have an organized address book, that's where the data is. It also can be backed up. It's the same in outlook and outlook express, only the location can change, and that can be a crap shoot, thus the search for *.pst.

The trick on any of these is to find the folder that has the data, than on the windows explorer, set view to details, and click the date header to sort by date. Back up anything that changes frequently.

hope it helps
