Somethings wrong with the wiring HELP!

Hello All,

My question is this. when I pull the switch for my bilge pump or when it turns on automatically it turns off my fish finder but don't blow any fuses???

I'm confused,
I would think that once the bilge pump kicked on, that it would blow a fuse for either the fish finder or the bilge it self. but it don't. the bilge pump will keep running and only the fish finder will turn off. when I turn the pump off I can power up the fish finder again with no problems. I don't have any problems with vhf radio and cd player while on. by the way! it's all connected to 1 battery. the fish finder shuts down only when the bilge pump is on.

I don't get it!

all help would be great,

Thanks,
Al

maybe bilge is drawing too much current.. fish finders are programed to shut down, when the voltage drops. are they on the same fuse?

You have a voltage drop somewhere. I would run a seperate set of power/ground wires directly to your battery for your fishfinder and see if it does the same thing.

no it's not on the same fuse, the bilge pump switch is on it's own fuse as for all other electronics . but the previous owner may have spliced into the positive wire on the bilge pump , this is something I will have to check.

most likely that's the problem, I was unaware that fish finders are programmed to shut down with low voltage or maybe even a power surge.

well time to trace wires...FUN

Thanks for your quick reply.

There will be two large wire that feeds the fuse panel. One of which will go to the ground bus. With the bilge pump on, measure the voltage drop form the positive side of the battery to the positive feed on the fuse panel. Then measure the negative from the negative post of the battery to the ground bus. Should be measuring tenths of volts but no more.

I was told with the fish/depth finder instructions with mine about interference, to have the wires as far away as possible from cb,radio, pumps due to they will interfere caused by electrical noise "noise"
