'85 Johnson 70 VRO (Deleted) CJ70ELCOS. The motor has been used in the chuck (salt water) from new and had been stored for the past 3 years. Properly stored I should add, in that it was flushed regularly and fogged etc when layed up. It did sit out on the mooring buoy through the summer months, but was always stored properly. It has been permanently "retired" to fresh water use only from now on but on the first trip out after replacing the plugs, ign wires and waterpump and fresh Hi Vis gear oil she emits a fair amount of steam through the exhaust ports at the top of the leg after running flat out. There is water coming out as well, in what I would consider a normal amount: kinda like a mild to moderate "spittle" at idle. The steam lessens a bit after idling and it is not overheating at all and she seems to be running fine. I just do not recall seeing quite that much steam coming out before. Not extraordinary amounts but enough to notice, even from a distance.

Could it be that the water passages are a bit blocked with salt and maybe has some hot-spots? Or is this a sign of a potentially blown head gasket? The plugs all look the same: Dark brownish to tan in colour with a bit of black which is normal really and like I said she spins up smartly and idles steady with no signs of anything out of the ordinary. I did not replace the thermostat but it is clearly opening and closing as it should with the temps at ~190F, max, on my infra-red thermo when running hard and ~130 or so at idle.

Cheers!

under certain weather conditions, you will see what appears to be steam. same thing as your car does, or seeing your breath so to speak.

Ya, I was kinda thinking the same, but I didn't think it was cold enough. Humidity was high though with the air temp about 60 and the lake was also a bit colder than usual, so it just might be exactly as you suggest. Maybe I'm obsessing this a bit too much... I might decide to tear it down over the winter so I'll just keep an eye on it til then. Maybe I'll rig up a real temp gauge meantime. I don't trust that horn much. Pretty much just announces that your motor is already hooped.

Thanks pal.
