one more question sorry to ask so much but with my particular motor, is there anything that i can really mess up on the carb being an inexperienced boat mechanic with a repair manual and ok tools in hand. by removing it to clean it and replace gaskets and such?

Take your time, have a decent manual and ask here as you go if you need to.
You will get all the help you need.

As I recall, your carburetors are suspected of being gummed up. The high speed jets are in the very bottom of the carb bowl, where all the gum forms. They must be absolutely positively clean!! That means you should take them out and inspect them. Which means that you need a special screwdriver to get them out. A regular screwdriver risks destroying them and making them impossible to ever get out.

On the same topic, the jets have a number stamped on them, indicating size. Normally, they are all the same size, but who knows. Whatever, put them back in the same hole they came out of.

Finally, when you get all done, use that manual and get the synchronizing right on the money.
