Re: sorry to bother

There is something fishy about that model number. The leading numbers indicate the horsepower (35), R means rope start, L means long shaft, and 75 is the year. However there is no such thing as a 1975 35hp as you found out, and besides it clearly is a 15. So, 15RL75x would be a legitimate model number if it truly is a 1975 long shaft, 15R75x for short shaft.

Re: sorry to bother

Okay, hope someone will still reply, this is model and ser. numbers

model 35rl75c

Ser. E4215788

Yes it was a long shaft, was converted to short shaft, is pull start, white lid says Johnson 15, green bottom. I have another idea, if numbers dont prove them selves, could the motor have been put on a different transom mount?

If this were the case is there any where else to pull numbers off motor? I know my motorcycle has different locations to achieve results.

Thanks for the help.

Re: sorry to bother

So, does your outboard have a low, slanted cover (cowling)? If so, it cannot be a 70's 35hp, which have nice rectangular cowlings. If the plate says 35, then something's wrong. Maybe someone got creative with a metal number stamp or something. I don't know.

But...if it has the sloping, low cowling, it has to be a 15hp.

Look on the engine block for a flat plug. Some have the model number of the engine on them, along with the serial number. Or, take and post a photo of your outboard.

no, its a flat top, I think it has a different transom mount as its white and rest of motor is green, bolts that mount to transom pivot point are green like motor, I will try and post some pictures and will ck for tag.

I have all the manuals for a 1977 ...15hp Johnson. Post a picture of the motor. If I remember right a 15 hp weighs 72 Lbs . If it has the sloping, low cowling, it has to be a 15hp

Green shaft, green transom mount. I think was a 1975 or 1976

Yes, stupid me its sloping, and I will post some pictures, I work tell 7am so will get to it later. The funny thing is it has a white transom mount. I agree its a 15hp, but for me to order parts, what reference model do I use? I may call on you to use your manual for a little while. I want to replace water pump with a new kit.

First welcome to I Boats. Second where are you? Third you can have the manuals. I sold the 15 four years ago and forgot to give the guy the manual. He never came back for it. Send me your address in an email. You can have it for postage. My 1977 was white with Orange and I think Black stripes. The green ones were a year or two older. Great motors by the way! I also had a 1973 6 hp
but I don't remember the color of it. I'd know it if I saw one though. that's why I said post a picture. When you get a chance of course. I'm not sure if it shows how to change the water pump or not. I have the owners and i think service manuals. I'll look to see tonight. As you can see top right corner I'm in Michigan. Northern Michigan in fact. Just click on my name top left corner and there's a drop down menu for you to select.

I found the manuals I have. One is the owner's - Operators manual. The other is the service manual which just list Johnson Dealer and service centers..
They don't show how to change the Impeller or water pump..
The motor cover on mine was White with three different shades of orange stripes and Grey. The lower unit was all White. the model # was 15R77. It does say the serial # is found on the port side Transom mount.
