While I was reading a post, another mention was made about the foam insulation coming off our hoods and with out the intake cover, foam gets sucked into the carbs and causing piston damage. As I was reading this, I had an epiphany, over my years of watching car and truck tv shows and seeing cars being built and what they used for sound deadener. Why couldn't we use it on our motor hoods. I know theres the silver backed sound deadener that audio guys like to use, but theres also a product called lizard skin thats spray on, and is supposed to work just as good as the sound mat. Would it be practical to clean the inside of the hood real good, and then apply sound mat, or spray lizard skin on to deaden the noise from the engine?

Can only speak about my '79 Evinrude 100. It has grey foam glued to the inside cover. I have seen others with foil back glued to the cover. Won't comment about other outboards. This 100 is fairly quiet cover anyway.

many of those interior only sound deadeners do not do well around fuel and oil as one finds in the underside of an engine cowl. there are engine specific sound deadening matts.

Scotts right about the fuel/oil under the hood.
Under the hood of my Suburban the motor doesn't get tilted and it stays dry.
Tilt an outboard? and the fuel drips out the front.

The silver stuff works, just seal the edges real good.

I just removed it and never looked back.
Under way(even trolling) the motors aren't that loud.
