I have an 1988 larson 17.5 foot with an OMC cobra 4.3 V-6. When cruising in a nice strait line and the trim just right all sounds great, however if I turn or trim up or down at all it sounds like theres a bearing or u-joint type "roaring noise" comes from the rear but kind of follows the floor up.

I'll pull the lower unit only if needed before the season.
Any suggestions appreciated

the only way to tell is to remove the drive inspect and repiar worn parts BEFORE they fail and make the drive become non-repiable or damage other parts that were good

tommays

just run it
that way when it fails you will know what went wrong
no worries its always cheaper if it takes itself apart.

If the noise gets worse when you turn left or right, it's usually the ujoints, if the noise gets worse triming up, it's usually the gimbal bearing.

More than likely, your bellows had (or have) water getting in them, and that noise is the u joints or the gimble bearing (or both, likely). If you fix it now, and pull the drive and bearing yourself, it'll cost you probably $200 or so. If it blows up, which it will do no question about it, it will cost you significantly more, plus the tow you'll need to get in, if your boat does not sink before sea tow gets there from the damage caused.

Get our drift? Fix it, it's still only March! You have all summer yet.
