I am helping a friend who has a Merc 9.9 sailmaster. The spark advance is not advancing as the carb opens up. The spark advance depends on a spring to advance the spark as the carb linkage advances. Something must be gummy with the system. I sprayed WD-40 on the exposed linkage, this helped somewhat. My question is, is it adviseable to turn the motor upside down and try to put some light oil on the spark advance collar inorder to lubricate the sliding surfaces. Would the oil hurt any coils or electronics under the flywheel ? Your help is appreciated.

Re: spark advance on 9.9 sailmaster

I would be hesitant to spray anything under the flywheel....may be ok; maybe not. The safest thing to do would be to pull the flywheel and see what the problem is. Good luck.<br />Bob ;)
