spark arrester filter

This may sound stupid but here goes. I just had bought a crownline with a 4.3 gl and had noticed that the spark arrester had no filter unit with it. The boat would flood out easily and I was wondering if the arrester should have a foam or paper element around it. The arrester is nothing more than a metal diffuser. I t was filthy and I'm sure that some of that dirt went down the carb.

The flame arrester has no dust filter in it. If some dirt fell in the carb, tape a smaller tube to your shop-vac that'll reach inside and suck it out or take it off and do it.

Ya, they don't have air filters per se becuase boats don't run in dusty environments like cars do. They do get somewaht greasey but the fins do a good job of keeping that minor amout out of the engine. The design of them also makes them look somewhat dirty even when they are clean - it's a sort of shadow affect.<br /><br />I clean mine with a light duty pressure washer and a little degreaser (greased lighning)/ 3M Marine Aluminum restorer and polish does a good jub of shinning them up too.<br /><br />If you want a filter, I think the K&Ns may have one with actual filters and still is Coast Guard approved arrestor - also improve HP and efficiency as only K&Ns can - they are next on my wish list.
