Re: Spark Check tool

By the way, you're not going to save any money buying this on ebay - you can get one just like it at your local autoparts store for about $10 (in my town both NAPA, Schucks and Carquest all have them).

My understanding is that this sort of in line plug tester can tell you if you're getting spark, but not the strength. I was told to get an adjustable type like this:

edited to add, because I prematurely posted the above:

adjustable spark tester

There are a million sources on line for this tool, but again, I'd bet you could find one locally for the same price. I called up my local Snap On guy and he sold me one for about $10.

For adjustable test for multiple cylinders, here's a great homemade one recently posted in a thread on this very forum:
look here for spark tester (you'll have to scroll down a ways = there's a photo posted). I'm sure you could make a 6 cylinder version.

Good luck.

Good luck.

I've gotta get one of those. It's neat, clean, and looks like just the thing. I'm tired of rigging up some bogus thing to do this job.

I always just lay the plug on the engine block and get someone to turn the engine over. Guess this can only test to see if there is spark.not really good to test strength of spark.

Re: Spark Check tool

I don't have a proper spark tester. But I have some old plugs where I bent the ground electrode way out which makes a gap of approximately 3/8". I figure if it jumps this and looks good, the ignition system is healthy. If I were doing this professionally, I'd invest in an adjustable tester. But for quick, dirty and cheap I think my poor man's tester does a pretty good job.
