Spark control rod adjustment

I bought a factory manual for my '05 50HP Johnson. A prior owner messed with all the factory linkage adjustments. I need to go through and reset the factory throttle and timing settings. What is the best way to disconnect the caged plastic Heim like joint from the captured steel ball?

Normally just pulls off (with a little twist) with some effort.
