Ok, tash checked his manual and said my 1973 85 HP Johnson uses a Champion UL77V. Which is what I replaced, because I had checked Champions website and came up with a completly different plug. Click on link:

So I looked in my service manual and it says the same as tash's. Old eyes don't always see the little print the first time, thanks tash!

If the plugs looked physically the same, and the numbers sounded like they were close to the same heat range I wouldn't think much about it. However, the UL77V is a gapless plug, and the ones on Champions web are to be gapped at .030.

I really want to put the best running plug in but am not sure which way to go... UL77V or what Champ has listed?

I believe it should be UL77JC4 gapped at .030".

The JC4 is the replacement for the surface gap plug. The plugs with electrodes will idle better.

You can open them up to .040" for even better idling.

Since your 33 year old service manual was published, there have been changes over the years.

The only true spark plug chart for J-E engines is published annually in the factory Parts and Accessories book that every dealer has.

The latest factory recommendation for your 1973 motor is the Champion QL77JC4 or L77JC4 plug gapped at .030".

Re: spark plug confusion

championsparkplugs.com is only a branch of sparkplugs.com and is not a part of Federal-Mogul Champion, Champion Sparkplug USA. They also have a site named autolitesparkplugs.com but they're not affiliated with Autolite, owned by Honeywell.

Re: spark plug confusion

Be vary wary of the championsparkplugs.com site. On a number of the older engines they've got the wrong spark plug listed. Such as a J8C for the 60s 40hp engines; a plug that can easily destroy those engine and was never recommended anywhere.
The latest Champion application guides (from Champion) contain the same error.
