Spark Plug Controversy

I have two fairly well established boat mechanics giving two different opinions regarding spark plug selection. I have a 1999 90hp Johnson outboard that I believe the factory suggests to run champion spark plugs. I have one mechanic agreeing with this and then I have one mechanic stating that the boat runs better with NGK and replaced the brand new champions that I just put in...

I see there is alot of discussion about this topic which from what I have read leans toward using champion plugs. If my boat runs better with NGK's what am I to do....

Re: Spark Plug Controversy

You should use the plugs recommended by the manufacturer, QL78YC I think.

I cannot find an equivalent NGK plug!

Re: Spark Plug Controversy

Probable reason could be that the Evinrude 1999 90HP C suffix models [FFI] did in fact use and recommend the NGK plug. All the rest of the 90HP 1999 recreational models, Evinrude and Johnson, list only the Champion Plug QL78YC.

As a mechanic I'll second that.
