i have a 1978 johnson 70 hp. i was wondering if i should replace the spark plugs? it starts perfect and idles perfect, couldnt be any better! but as far as i know they havent been changed in a while if they ever have.

will getting new plugs improve fuel milage?

will they make the motor run better?

what are the advantages of replacing them?

Just change half of them. That way you can't be all wrong and you will be halfway right!:D

Sorry, I can resist anything but temptation.

Then why'd you bother to ask?

I think you're bieng cheap.

You know, It will always run better with new spark plugs!

Years ago in the 60's, I thought I was smart, I picked up a clean blue 61' Chevy Biscayne 6cyl stick reasonable, and put 60k miles on the spark plugs that it came with, and bragged about it,,, then one day, I went to start it, & it was misfiring, I took out the spark plugs to check, and found one plug with the side electrode missing  I have no idea where it went, maybe out the exhaust valve? but luckily, it didn't damage the motor thank god, I decided right then, & there, not to do that again.

I suspect your car would run good even if you didn't change the oil so why bother? I think if you at least pulled the plugs and had a look at them you would change your mind.

Spark plugs should always be checked at the dock side. That way they can be properly float tested. You'll never go wrong.:D

i pulled them out about a month ago and they "looked" fine, but the motor runs good and there are other things that need to be done to the boat, but they are definately goin to be replaced soon!

any suggestions on brand or type?

Re: Spark plug questions??

How much does a set of Champion plugs cost? How much trouble are they to change on the water when an old one quits on you? I change plugs each season. I put a set of new ones in and, if the old ones look and run fine, I bag them and put them in my tackle box for spares. So far, I've never had a problem with plugs in my outboards, right next to the spark plug socket and the phillips screwdriver that fits in the hole in the socket.

Given the cost of a gallon of fuel, spark plugs seem pretty cheap to me. But, that's just one guy's opinion
