I took some pictures of the plugs today after another break-in run. Are these plugs burning ok?

Does having to much white porcelyn means the engine is burning lean?

Is this a pcv valve? This thing was loading water vapour in my rocker cover. Is this a mercruiser part?

This is a picture of what I'm up against.
Thank you

Re: SPARK PLUG READING

Plugs look ok I guess from here.

One of them on the back row left looks a little light around the rim.

I think that is a one way valve that lets crankase vapor exit through the exhaust.

If you are getting froth in the valve cover it could be from blow by getting past the rings.

Run a compression check on all cylinders and stick a vacuum guage on it at idle. (look for steady needle)

Re: SPARK PLUG READING

That don't look right at all (hose set up). I have never seen anything like that. You have two valve cover breathers. Two fill caps and then hoses running to the exhaust? Why? I cant even understand why you would need all that. IMHO You should have a breather on one side only and have a fill on the other (or you could just use a breather fill cap) and the PCV valve running to the carburetor or flame arrestor. All the rest of that is overkill by a long shot. The silver thing in you exhaust that the hose goes to now looks like a check valve to stop water from being pushed back to the valve cover from the exhaust. Where does that other hose (on the left side in the picture) from the valve cover go to? There is no way I would be running a hose from my wet exhaust to my valve cover. There is something that just isn't right about that.

Re: SPARK PLUG READING

the engine came with what u see . and your gues is good as mine.the silver thing/CHECK VALVE was stuck open with rust i used a drumel and cleand it up it works fine now.when the engine is runing this silver thing sucks the air out the rocker cover . i have to get a T fitting to join the other hose. the other hose pluged from the rocker cover is pluged for now.
how do i darken up those spark plugs ? would retarding the timing work?

Re: SPARK PLUG READING

scrap the hot rod bubba breather and move it back to the flame arrestor. also fix that abortion of a fuel system before ya get a ticket or worse. as far as the plugs go it takes more than one run to tell sometimes. if the motor pulls well and idles well you can richen the main jetting on the primary side a bit.
that check valve set up has created problems in marine use. we used it a lot for venting the crankcase on race motors. we found it did not work so well in the wet exhaust stream.. and fix that bonding wire :) :) .
but do scrap the open rocker breathers. I dont know about canada but here they are illegal. your rig would be taken of the property about 3 min after I opened the engine box unless I knew it was strictly used in sanctioned racing. give us another pic with the flame arrestor off.
lets see if its got a marine carb. we can try to assist in bringing your rig to meet certain safety standards but someone that knows your countries laws will be needed. rubber hose and worm clamps are not allowed on the pressure side of the fuel system here. and any rubber line on the suction side below decks has to be type A and be able to withstand a direct flame for a specific amount of time. also can ya tell us if it has an electric fuel pump. if it does is the pump wired through an oil pressure switch or is it on anytime the ign is on?
I had to repair a Python with a big block last summer. 7 hours to repair it and 15 to make it meet USCG and ABYC codes. all due to the amount of hot rod stuff.
I mean it looks pretty but here we have to make it legal.

Re: SPARK PLUG READING

I hooked up the fuel pressure regulator yesterday, it's set at 6 psi. The fuel lines that I normally use can withstand 60 psi without clamps. That fuel setup is temporary until I fix the engine. It's a mechanical fuel pump. The problem that I had with gas being dumped into the crankcase was from driving at idle speed with the engine cold/warm. It takes 5 min to clear the no wake zone. I changed to a different launch where it's open water. As soon as I launch my boat my oil smells like oil once again. This boat was bought from a guy that worked for GM and he used to race it. I will take some more photos of the boat/engine and you can tell me what's hot and what's not. I'll send the carb in tomorrow to get the primary jets biggie sized. THANKS FOR THE HELP.

Re: SPARK PLUG READING

I got home a bit late today so I had to take these pictures inside.
The plugs closest to you are 1 3 5 7. The ones in the back row are 2 4 6 8.

I know I have to get the jets re-sized but I unleased the engine today - I did 56 mph WOT at 4800 rpm. Around 4000 rpm the engine "bogs" a little until I give it more throttle and then it clears. This only happens at 4000 rpm. What can that problem be? Thanks
