Couldn't really find any info when i did a search, or goggled this. i am wondering if anyone has noticed any benefit to switching to a... fancier / or upgraded spark plug. Gettn ready to do cap rotor , plugs on my stock 86 4.3 T-Bolt IV ignition. Manual calls for AC-MR43T or Chumpion RV8C. But since the manual has been printed ,There have been alot of POTENTIONALLY better plugs developed. NGKs, Iradium , platinum, Splitfire, Nuclear tipped, Ya Know what I mean.... Im wondering if anyone has any real world positive results by swithing up? Or is it all just $$$ hype ? THX..........Paul

I would stick with the ac delcos. Its not like you are going to get the life expectancy out of them anyway so why pay even more? For more mpg? I think the gains you might see would be eaten up by the additional cost of the plug. Just my thoughts...

I posted this question about a year back, same MR43T plugs. I was told that the upgraded plugs really won't make a difference. I believe it was Bondo who wrote "Theres no super plugs.." You could get a set of NGK BR6FS plugs. The engines that use RV8C or MR43T also can use the NGK above. Theyre about $1.50 each online, but of coures therye more like 4 each at west marine.

Thx Ive always liked Nihon Gaishi Kaisha..[ NGKs] plugs, simply because I PERCIEVE them as higher quality, just for the fact I see them called for for many hi-perf applications Like my snowmobile engines for instance, 700cc, 128 HP . turning upto 8000 RPMs

I tried the nicer plugs in my boat (350 alphaI) it calles for the same plug as yours. The plugs were quite a bit more expensive and I saw NO better anything out of them. Use what you will but the AC units that are called for is what the engine was designed to run on, not saying the NGK's or Champs arent fine but I like the AC's. I use NGK's in my sleds and dirtbikes but like yours thats what they call for.

I'm going to semi hijack the thread and ask something the OP may also like to know. For the plug wires, cap, rotor, and fuel filter is there any real difference between the cheaper (sierra seems to be cheaper) and the OEM or other aftermarket parts? If so, any recommendations?

I understand what you are saying, but technology has advanced. In 86 perhaps the AC plugs were the best technology, but the plugs have advanced, and maybe my old engine could benefit from the newer technology that is available now. If my boat was brand new, I wouldn't question what the manual called for, Ya know what I am sayn'?

Me, the OP is gonna comment on this even. I believe Sierra [and other aftermarket brands]...Mallory, puke GLH or whatever double puke... IMHO ... is trying to copy oem parts, and some are probably acceptable, as good , maybe sometimes better. But I would think overall, they are not going to be quite as good. I do use some of thier part in non-critical functions, and have had pretty good success. I think some parts are easier to determine if they are ...not as good, equal to, or better then OEM, just by looking at them and comparing the posted tech statistics. For instance, plug wires with a larger core with a larger voltage carrier ability, or a coil that puts out a higher voltage, along with a cap and rotor with larger and/ or better contacts would be a more obvious upgrade IMHO! As long as the construction is quality etc. Of course I may just be buying into the hype [ ie... SUCKER! ] Spark plugs are a bit harder to tell, to me anyhow. To a degree I believe you get what you pay for. If you buy spendy, high performance parts from a Hi Perf Speed Shop. I would hope it would be better then SOME , OEM parts, or for sure better then discount chinese parts from Little Stinkys Discount Marine Supply and Pet Shop { my apologies to Stinky }

Awesome find K9... Im a little confused though It says engines with serial num OM 3000000 and above. And it says Production years b4 april 06 should use AC-41-932 My ser num is A539369 is that-below- OM 3000000 ? I cant really find an OM in the serial num progression chart???? That cht has always confused me a bit. Mine definitely mfd before Apr 06..... Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Ayuh,.... "A" came Long before "M"....

The MR43T is the sparkplug for Yer motor....
The MR43LTS is for Vortec headed motors...
It'll potentially hit yer pistons in yer motor...

The platinum plugs are a Waste of gas money in a boat...

Most boaters are so anal 'bout their boat, the sparkplugs NEVER wear out, 'n Long life is the Only selling point of the Newer plugs...

Thx bondo, But do you see what I find a bit confusing ? Of course " A " came before " M". If you had a list, my engine with an "A" would be ABOVE "M " ??? Wouldn't it ? Like on a seniority list at work. If someone started working there BEFORE me, They are ABOVE me on the seniority list. If it said "M " and "newer' or "later" it would be easier for me to understand. And mfgd b4 Apr 06 is mine as well...???????????????:confused:
I do believe they dont normally wear out. Maybe if you were running charters or something they could. But normally not. I have just been pulling my plugs out, cleaning, gappn' em and reinstalling them. for the last 6-8 years. The electrodes and grounds are a bit sooty, but not worn out. I do get concerned that the porcelain might start to disintegrate in be ingested tho...Good to know Platinum's are just for long life:rolleyes:

Re: Spark plug Upgrade on a '86 4.3... Is it worth it ?

I do know what your sayin, I was of the same thought that maybe the new tech. would help me out a bit so I popped for the expensive super iridium plugs. I never thought it would be like a new motor or anything but maybe just maybe it would help with startup, run on, mpg, smoothness, or something but no it was exactly the same running boat as it was before(it ran/runs fine) Just one guys opinion though. Somewhat unrelated I used to have a Jeep cj7 that would not run on anything but stock plugs, tried platnum, and everything else and no go. Could never figure that one out...
