Spark plug?

I just purchase a boat with a 88hp 95 Evinrude. Very strong motor,, but on thing I noticed was that 3 of the 4 spark plugs was wet and the one on the starboard top was white and dry. Should this plug be a little wet too? Is it a matter of adjusting the mixture at the carb for that cylinder? Plugs not fouling. Are the plugs suppose to be wet? Thanks

P.S. Compression 120 across the board. Lower unit good!!!

Re: Spark plug?

MinnOak.... Compression sounds okay. Remove the spark plugs and check the spark. It should jump a 7/16" gap with a strong blue flame. What plugs are you using, and at what gap? Let us know what you find.

Re: Spark plug?

There is a little change to my last message. The spark plug that is white and dry is on the top port side. Does this make a difference for diagnosis? I will still check the gap, the spark, and the plugs. Can you tell what I'm looking for, i.e if I have spark what next? If the spark is strong what next? Is the spark plug suppose to be damp with fuel and oil?

Re: Spark plug?

If you have spark of the quality as I've explained it, and the compression is okay, then I would suspect a fouled carburetor.

minnoak,

Probably not. It may be time to go into the carbs.

I would do it before you melt down that cylinder. It's not that hard, with a manual.

Rebuild of the carbs or to what extent? Should I have the other set done also?

Re: Spark plug?

Would the engine run as strong as it does with a fouled carb? This thing idles great has very good power and runs about 45mph with no miss. Don't doubt your expertise at all, just asking.

Re: Spark plug?

Hey guys,
Got the info on the plugs. They are Champion QL77JC4, strong spark, gaped at .036 all of them. Rebuild carb for that cylinder?
